F55 flat link or ultrahook (prefer the latter).

I will die on this hill.

I like the versatility of the Ultrahook. Depending on the situation, it can be used with either soft or steel shackles or hooked and latched to both rope and strap baskets.

I do the same. The soft shackle I use is a well used one I found on the trail. Since it’s constantly exposed to the elements I won’t use it for actual winching, I have another 4 or 5 fresh ones I can use.
I attended an off-road recovery class and they were big proponents of eliminating as much metal as possible. They are also fans of roller fair leads, even for synthetic rope, because it reduces friction on the rope.
How do you connect the soft shackle to the end of your winch line without it being doubled up? Did you make a brummel loop at the end of your winch line? Thanks, from a winching newb. :)

Soft shackle are a ball in a loop. Here, a picture is worth a thousand words.

My winch rope still has the metal loop/eye at the end like this.

I'm a fan of the winch thimble fan myself, but I run a knock off $20 amazon special.

I’ve said it a million times before and will repeat it…
Cheap Amazon or elsewhere recovery gear can/will definitely badly injure you or kill someone. Never skimp on recovery stuff!!!

The tool in the video is called a fid. Everyone with synthetic rope on their winch should carry one in their recovery gear. If Factor 55 makes anything worth its price, it's their fid. It's a unique fid in that it incorporates a wire chinese fingertrap like some electrician fish lines. But in a pinch, you can use a stick you whittled to a point or a Bic pen, and some tape.
Looks very similar to a lot of (baseball) glove lacers I've seen

Thanks. I am familiar with a soft shackle, but didn't think it would be able to roll up into the winch while in a closed loop like the example in the bottom right of your image. I was assuming it would have to be like the example in the bottom right, so it wasn't doubled up going into the fairlead, but somehow connected at the loop end of the soft shackle to the end of the winch line.

But it sounds like the soft shackle is just being connected like the example in the bottom right.

Thanks for the input!

I used to attach my SS to the metal eye loop but then I discovered under high load the SS has a very small radius and the eye started to flatten. I now use a 7/8" D-ring there. Normally I need the D-ring on the end anyway.

I'd remove the metal eye loop from my winch line end-eye if I could. And keep the splicing it has. I could cut and re-splice but that's a waste.

Ultrahook for me so I can go either way. When turtled on a boulder at Crawl Daddy, the hook part of the ultra hook was great for the quick bump I needed to get off the rock

Any idea how much I hate you with the AEV bumper…. I mean damn…. Unfortunately can’t justify the expense…

I went with the WARN Sidewinder - black. I had a nice, red ProLink, but my wife said it looked like a dog's (ahem...) b*ner on the front of the Jeep. I couldn't unsee that... and went with something a little less... exciting.
