Looking to purchase a portable air compressor. Not really wanting to debate the benefits of an on board system . I prefer a portable . Looking to buy the best quality I can , Any experience with them good, bad is greatly appreciated.

We like our Viair 440P. Like the facts that it is relatively fast, has a long hose w/gauge, long cable, is relatively quiet, has an air-down function (which is helpful when you leave your Staun deflators on the fender and lose them first day into a 40 day out-west wheelin'/camping trip). Works well for us.

I have this one. So far it has worked well. What I don't like about it is:
The size. It is quite large. (Insert "that's what she said" joke here), and
The proprietary fitting on the air hose. If one of the hoses got damaged, then you would have to take it to a hose shop to get a standard fitting.

Have used the more compact Viair 300 quite a bit for the last two years. I have 33's and my buddy has 35's (yes, it works just fine for this tire size)- still works like a charm. Even made my own 4-tire inflator hose system like the MORRflate.

Here's a fun review:

What size tires are you running? This will be the single biggest factor on what you can use.
I have the smittybilt linked above. It works ok for 37s. I've tried the 440p and it is similar, but more $.

I'm doing a homebuild powertank next.

Viair 400P here as well. You’ll almost certainly hear that name from a large amount of people. Mine is 3 years old and still going strong. Go with them.

I have the Viair 400P Automatic Portable Air Compressor - it works well, nice size, pretty quiet, too.

I was just going to say to avoid the Smittybilt dual. It's ungainly / just about too big for the included bag, the tubing is painful to manage / gets tangled, and the connectors are a pain in the ass to connect / disconnect.

I ended up replacing that with an ARB dual, but Kraken-mounted this time. Highly recommended.

+1 for Viair 400p automatic.
Another +1 if you have a 7 pin trailer connector from the HD package. Any compressor with 30A or less of peak draw can be run off that plug instead of opening the hood and clamping onto the battery.

I have the ARB single piston compressor. It comes mounted into a “toolbox” of sorts, which can contain the hose too. I bought an ARB digital gauge to use with it. So far it does an admirable job. But if I were to buy again, I’d buy the portable version of their twin compressor for the increased air up speed.

That’s interesting! how would you plug in the compressor to the trailer hitch? Is this connection a factory option or would you have to “build your own”?

thanks!
