I was curious what yall were running for air compressors so I was searching the forum for a thread about portable air compressors be it installed on board or carried from its resting area to your jeep and used offroad. I put some questions below and answered them for my compressor! Let me know what yall have!

What kind do you have? Napa Maxi Trac twin.

Price? On sale $139.99(during Covid last one in the state. Called around to all the Napa Auto Parts in Washington and found it then Drove 6hrs to pick it up)

Do you like it? Yes. It’s incredibly fast.

How long does it take to air up after being aired down on the trail? I usually air my 35s down to 13psi and it takes roughly 3-5minutes to air back up to 28/29psi.

Do you have a 4way inflation/deflation system? Not yet. I plan to build a DIY kit. Current have the Rhino USA Pro Tire Deflator Kit. It works really well. Takes about 4 minutes to deflate all 4 tires.

Anything else you want to add about it? The maci trac twin compressor is wildly fast compared to a buddies (brand new at the time)arb twin. I was finished with all 4 tires by the time he got to his 3rd tire. The maxi trac twin is about as fast as a 4way inflator on a single piston portable. Everyone I’ve gone wheeling with is amazed by how fast I’m finished airing back up. Now there is no regulator on the machine so I have to turn it off every time to check the pressure(until I got the wrangler) the air hose it comes with leaves too much to be desired, from its stupid connector to the built in gauge not working. It stays relatively cool. The hose coming off the machine gets pretty hot but cools quickly. There are lots of YouTube videos on how to make it super efficient! But it does the job. I’d like to be able to run a regulator on it so I don’t have to stand at the drivers side and monitor the tire pressure!

What kind do you have? ARB Twin Compressor mounted w/ Grimm Offroad’s bracket kit.

Price? About $850 for compressor and bracket kit.

Do you like it? Yes. It’s been a reliable compressor over the years, even with it being mounted outside my Jeep’s cabin.

How long does it take to air up after being aired down on the trail? Usually takes about 5-10 mins to air up my 37s to 33-35psi. I typically air down to 20-15psi depending on the trail.

Do you have a 4way inflation/deflation system? I do. I originally purchased/used the Speedflate 4X Coiled System for a couple of years until I tweaked it.

Anything else you want to add about it? With my compressor being mounted behind the driver’s side front fender, I connect to it via the Grimm Offroad 4XE Charge Port Air Chuck Conversion Kit. Before, I had to connect my air up system to the air chuck mounted under my hood. Now, I no longer have to pop the hood.

Brand: Viair 450P portable. Since we have two Jeeps I wanted a "bagged" compressor to move from Jeep to Jeep.

Price: I bought it in 2017. Think it was around $225 at the time.

Reliability: 8 years of hard labor and still going strong.

Time to re-air: We run our 33s at about 15psi on trails and at 32 on roads. Re-air takes about 2 minutes a tire. I plan on running my 35s at 10psi (bead grip wheels) on the trail and I run them at 25psi on the road. I expect the time to increase a little.

4 way inflation: Nope. Do not see the need.

Deflation: Arb deflator and Boulder Tools screw-on deflators

Inflator gun is a home-made conglomeration of a ball valve, analog dial air gauge, 6 foot long hose, and LockNFlate open flow locking air chuck.

I have several air compressors from a Fanttik that I can hold in my hand to a Medium sized Viair. None compare to using a my Powertank CO2 setup. Sub 1min per tire. Does not get hot / not effected by the temps outside / makes no noise. I typically get dozens of 15 to 35psi fills out of one tank.

don’t waste your time or money with cheap store bought compressors. They lack the CFM power, duty time, and are known to overheat all while taking 10+ mins to inflate large tires. I’ve burned thru several of them over the years. The Arb twin setup is legit. I would check the specs on that unit and benchmark the other compressors to that.

People seem to have very short memories are they relate to how long it takes them to air up.

I have 2 setups.

Morreflate TenSix PSIPro with quad hose setup. Works great and can do other stuff while filling the tires back up. No issues filling the 40's.

Power tank 10lbs CO2 - Super fast but have to remember to get the bottles filled.

So you guys are filling your tires with CO2 or nitrogen? I work at a place where we sell gases and other welding equipment we have a guy who has a 40lb nitrogen bottle he comes in a swaps out he uses for his rock bouncer!

I know first hand that my cheap Napa twin compressor which is 10.95cfm is faster than the older arb twin and new arb twin!

Good morning Joe,
Really cool setup you’ve got there! Sounds like that Maxi Trac twin has been a beast for you. Appreciate all the details, too. That kind of feedback helps everyone.

If you’re ever looking for another solid option or a backup that doesn’t break the bank, you might want to check out our Quadratec RES-Q 30 Amp Portable Air Compressor. It’s a single-piston unit but surprisingly quick — we’ve had a lot of folks with 35s air up from trail pressure in just a few minutes. It’s super compact, comes in a hard shell case, has a 25-ft hose, screw-on chuck, and a built-in gauge that’s actually accurate out of the box.

It runs straight off your battery and has built-in thermal protection for safety and reliability. We’ve got some great customer reviews on it, too, if you want to see what others are saying!

Happy to answer any questions if you’re curious!

Have a great rest of your day!

I've been running a Viair 400P for going on 15 years. It's still going strong with two faults.

  1. The handheld air valve between the hose and the tire has gotten a bit sticky and it doesn't release immediately anymore. It takes a couple of seconds to close the valve when you let go.
  2. One of the zippers on the bag has failed on one end.
That's it. It is otherwise chugging along with no real issues.

my 400P has been going a long time too....I have been thru 3 hoses..the orginal yellow hose valve head gave up years ago, I replaced it with the Viair black hose and recently replaced that with a red rubber hose......I have more than gotten my money's worth out of it. This year I got a trailer 7pin connector and made things even easier.....

Seems like a great compressor! The tire fill times and continuous run time are impressive for a single piston. The CFM doesn’t seem impressive but the reviews do intrigue me! My bag is also pretty much trash and the maxi trac is a big unit. I like that your RES-Q is compact and that it comes in a hard case to protect it from bouncing on the trail!

I recently got the new ARB Brushless twin portable twin setup and though their stuff is a little more expensive then others holy shit are these things impressive. Like I said I just got it so haven't been out on the trail with it yet but to give it a test run I aired all four of my 37's down to 10lbs then filled them back up to 32 one at a time and ARB knocked it out of the park with this new twin brushless setup because I was able to air them back up about as fast as I wanted. I'll agree the price is a bit hefty but these things are very impressive with how fast they aired up my 37's from 10 to 32.

I ran a Viair compressor for the first 3 years of owning my jeep and off-roading. I am currently running a dual on board compressor from Up Down Air EGOI. its a rip off of the ARB dual
