Was putting new springs on the Jeep. Jacked it up with the floor jack, put the stand under it and let the jack down. The stand collapsed. Coulda been bad I guess. Took a look at the stand, and a drift pin had broken so that the teeth weren’t fully engaging. These are going in the trash. I can’t even remember where I bought them. The brand is Larin from 2002 according to the date stamp.

It's good that it failed, before you were under it.

glad you're okay. everyone with these sheet metal stands needs to throw them out and replace with real fabricated ones with pins. actually many of them are recalled from what i understand. totally not worth farting around with your life. even with stands ill throw the tires underneath with wood crib etc. super scary

I don't like the design of the "ratchet" style stands. It's difficult to see how much engagement the pawl is getting.

Look for stands that meet ASME PASE-2019 ASME PASE-2019: Portable Automotive Service Equipment - ANSI Blog

This is what I bought recently. 6 ton. They are truly heavy duty stands and the pin is about 5/8" diameter.
Floor Jacks and Equipment - Martins Industries

Martins Industries Heavy Duty Steel Lock Jack Stands (MJS-6T) (amazon.com)
The Harbor Freight ones posted above in this thread also meet the standard, according to their website.

I definitely need to upgrade my stands; they're 3-ton, but a bit short for working on Jeeps.

I've always been a bit suspicious of the "ratchet pawl" style jack stands, but that is what I have in my garage right now circa 2011.

It's been a while but it sticks in my mind that I returned or discarded a pair where the pawl engagement seemed to be too tenuous to rely on. But who knows? That was 12 years ago.

Mayhapsably I'll upgrade to this sliding pin style featured in this thread. On my Tacoma, I did most work and install myself, so spent a fair amount of time working under it. On the Jeep, I paid a shop to do all my upgrades. I only use the stands now to support the trailer while I'm working on the hubs; no actual going underneath.

I hate to rain on the parade, but that failed roll pin doesn’t appear to have caused the stand to collapse. Looks to me like all it does is release the lock after the weight is removed and you lift the handle. The ratchet was likely not fully engaged into a tooth.
