I almost ran into the back of someone in a line of cars once because some lady thought it was prudent to stop for a turkey crossing the road. I came over the hill at 50 mph (speed limit was 55mph) and if it hadn't been for traffic finally moving in the nick of time I would have ran over a car or two. It worked out but gave me a pretty good scare. People could have been killed over a damn wild turkey...absolutely ridiculous. I could understand slowing down to minimize the damage to your own car but to just stop right there on the backside of a blind hill like that to wait for the stupid thing...dumb dumb dumb.
I had a similar experience with someone who came to a complete for a stupid goose wandering across a busy arterial. Didn’t cause an accident but backed up traffic…I went around; the goose moved rather quickly as I drove slowly into his space…. Geese are as numerous as sparrows where I live….

I'm surprised the insurance Karen's @DaltonGang and @azjl#3 haven't shown up to chastise anyone for driving up rates or making poor decisions...oh wait no I'm not because this happened on road and wheeling is what they have issues with.
lol

Not to crap on your thread, and I'm glad you're OK. Accidents happen which was the point I tried in vain to make to those guys in the other thread. You didn't see stopped traffic on a blind hill and tried to avoid a collision. It happens and that's why we have insurance. It's no different if it happens on a dirt road or in the dunes. File the claim, get it fixed, and just be glad everyone's OK.

Yep, I’ve always kept complete comprehensive collision coverage.
It's the liability coverage they're talking about. Never disclose your liability limits to anyone no matter what they are.

Glad you're OK. Shit happens.

No, I'm pointing out that accidents happen on and off road. Some members act like an accident off road was intentional or negligence and shouldn't be covered. I'm all for sharing your experience and I appreciate seeing how well the Jeep seems to hold up to a pretty significant impact. It happens and so long as nobody is hurt it's no big deal. Glad you're OK.

USAA ain't what it used to be. The USAA appraiser that looked at mine was useless. I had taken photos and sent them to them with a list of things that I know were damaged. Their "appraiser" came out and determined the damage to be about $2K (that wouldn't even cover the two wheels and tires that were damaged). After six months and about a dozen amendments, the repair cost was over $20k. At least they paid.

Good luck. Take your own damage inventory and photos and stay on top of your repair shop to make sure they don't overlook things.

This summer my wife's car was stolen and recovered. But due to what I would have considered minor damage they totaled the car.

Dealing with USAA was great and everything went very smooth it only drug out a bit at the end while waiting for Copart to finish the paperwork on their end.

They never sent an adjuster they first had me send a bunch of photos and they gave their preliminary estimate (which was very low) they then cut me a check for that amount. This did worry me as the amount was very low but it is designed as a low estimate just to get some cash in our hands quickly and we did receive the funds in less than a week.

We then brought it to a collision center of our choice, that did have some experience with USAA and it took about 10 days for them to deem it a total loss.

Pretty smooth overall, one thing I would recommend to anyone with USAA and nicer cars is to get the 20% over coverage that pays out 20% over value if the vehicle is totaled. This got us an extra 6k for like $8.00 per month added to our premium.

I've been with USAA for 33+ years. I know how they used to do things vs how they do them now. You used to call in and speak with a person to report an accident/file a claim. Now you do it through the app, with no opportunity to speak with a sentient being. The app asks a number of very unspecific questions and can make really dumb decisions based on your yes/no answers to poorly selected questions. For instance, after my hit-and-run, I was able to change a tire and drive the Jeep back to my home. However, the front suspension and steering were significantly out of whack. It was OK to get it off the road and home, but I didn't want to drive it down the mountain, into Denver in that state. The app asked me if it was "safe to drive". I answered "No." From that single question and response, USAA's dumb app leapt to the conclusion that it was likely totaled and they were sending a wrecker to take it to Copart. There it sat languishing and after 10 days wasted, they figured out it wasn't totaled, USAA finally called and said I needed to tell them where to have it towed then to get repaired. Of course, Copart pulled one of the plates so that when I finally did get the vehicle back, I had to go through the process of getting new tags for it. None of that would have ever happened before or even if I had the option to halt the Copart tow.

I'm still with USAA, because I have a long history and a lot of business with them, but they're hanging by a thread, at this point.

I try not to use app's for anything. I called and then uploaded photos/documentation online. As soon as a claims adjuster was assigned I had her name and number on speed dial talked with her every step of the way.

Find out who your claims adjuster/representative is and deal soley with them, I would have her on the phone as I uploaded docs. This way she could she what I uploaded and tell me directly if they needed more.

Copart was very aggressive in wanting to get our car once it was totaled, but we were buying it back. I was worried enough that I brought a trailer to the body shop and pulled it out of there, just so they did not take it while the paperwork was being finished.

Oh, gotcha. I’m still relatively new to the community so I don’t know the individuals in question. I appreciate the clarification and agree with you 100%! and yeah, thank god everyone walked away, except the Nissan lol. Hope that family is still good. Everyone was very cordial and shook hands at the end. I talked to the adjuster and Repair Shop today. Driving my JL to the shop tomorrow morning. All this place does is work on jeeps so I’m hopeful. Thanks again.

So I got a call from my adjuster asking me to sign a form to do exactly that. Progressive wanted to know my coverage limit. Assuming my adjuster has my best interest in mind I signed it. The other car is a total loss. He said me signing the form was to protect me.

I hope I didn’t make a mistake doing that. I’d be interested to hear your input on the situation.

Was driving down a road at about 35mph and crested over a hill and there was stand still traffic. Unusual because the road never has traffic, except for today. So I slam on the brakes, swerve right, and clipped the car in front of me.

Pretty sad about the whole thing but thank god everyone walked away uninjured.
But the other vehicle got towed.

Just a reminder, stay frosty folks.

Jeep is still drivable, but it definitely got messed up in the wreck. We’ll see what insurance does. That’s how the cookie crumbles!!!! lol

Update: when I was talking about the Repair Shop hooking me up with a steel bumper and winch in place of the original OEM bumper because they cost about the same price. If everything goes according to plan, this is what I should end up with once I get the jeep back!

I had a few not at faults over the decades and USAA has taken care of me every time, but everytime they send an adjuster my vehicle is already at a shop with my mechanic ready to give them the run down of exactly what needs to be fixed. Did you do that or just had the adjuster look at it by themself?

As for totaled vehicles, you have to message your agent back and forth with comparables to get a better price. Almost like negotiating. Same goes for all your mods. Show them photo of the mod on the vehicle and the receipt then they will adjust the estimate again and this goes on until you can’t find anymore receipts.

I don't have any real advice. If it was my situation and I was being asked to sign a form for the other guy's insurance company regarding policy limits, I'd probably be speaking with my own insurance company about what I should and shouldn't do, and/or seeking real legal advice.
