That's because they always keep changing the rules.
Airbags and seatbelts are totally unnecessary in an Army Jeep . Gen . Patton didn't need them .

I think the IIHS does some good and valuable work, but the government rating system is designed to make you think small cars are safer than large ones or trucks.

Hey, who has that video of the JL crash test? Please post the link. I'd love to see it!
IHSS is aware of that:

"Frontal crash test results can't be used to compare vehicle performance across weight classes. That's because the kinetic energy involved in the moderate overlap and small overlap frontal tests depends on the speed and weight of the test vehicle. Thus, the crash is more severe for heavier vehicles.

Given equivalent frontal ratings, the heavier of two vehicles usually offers better protection in real-world crashes. In 2009, IIHS demonstrated this principle with a series of tests in which small cars were crashed into larger cars, all of which had good frontal ratings in the moderate overlap test."

And obviously there could be 0 to N other moving objects hitting the vehicle. The nice thing is they are trying to put numbers not jsut on mitigation, but avoidance.

Its a nice piece of info, esp if looking at 2 little commuter cars otherwise equal and one is failing half the tests.

No, no, what I meant was if an older solid car had modern safety features and was crash tested side by side with a modern car that had a crumple zone, wouldn't the older solid one provide more protection to the occupants? I wasn't alive during the olden days so my knowledge of older cars is pretty much nonexistent.
Like a 60 ton tank hitting a prius , perhaps ?

I was surprised to see what a tree did to the roll cage of this jl. Reported as storm damage.

Remember: it’s not a “roll cage,” it’s a “sports cage”. Those are sports bars, not roll bars, that succumbed to the tree. Sports bars are intended for attaching aftermarket add-ons, not to protect passengers.

Yes, I'd prefer no airbags. I don't like things exploding around me. My niece was horribly burned in a 35mph collision from airbag gasses. Six surgeries later she can almost cover her scars with make up. No thanks. The one collision I was in with my 2003 TJ was a head on collision and I'm glad to this day the airbag didn't discharge. I got a sleight concussion from hitting my head on the center spreader bars of my cage. That's it.
I agree completely .

If you look at the NTSB testing, Jeeps don't fare as well as some other vehicles, but if you look at the real world accidents, Jeep do much better than most protecting occupants. Realizing that I live in a real world and not in a crash test, I chose accordingly. Again, I feel much safer driving today than I did yesterday.
Exactly correct ! Jeeps are actually safer in real fact .

Also , the safer drivers go slower , never pass , and are not intimidated or bullied by tailgaters . They also give room to motorcycles , bicycles and joggers . They also stop at least 10 or 15 feet behind the one stopped in front of them .

The worst drivers go fast , pass , tailgate , and drive wuss bmw's . ( At least in my town .)
