I also do this in case I need to spend some time under the jeep and I don't need to remove the tires.. it gives you plenty of space to roll around under the JL with a creeper

I know the odds of a stand breaking are low, but I have always put something like blocks of wood under the frame when I work under the car, just in case something happens. I prefer to think of overkill being the best kind when it comes be avoid situations like being crushed to death.

Timely topic for me. I just bought stands on Saturday from Amazon. I mulled over the right ones for months, and am now not convinced I chose correctly.

I like that the pin is shaped in such a way to suggest it’s providing double protection. It certainly would prevent the locking handle from moving. However if you look at the closeup, you can tell that the pin won’t fully engage the entire depth of the teeth on the ratchet arm. So it seems a bit superficial.

The post on Amazon says it’s ANSI rated, but neither the manual nor the actual stands mention the same.

Well, thank you for posting... I have some jack stands that are old....I can't even tell you the date on them. And honestly, those must had broke on mine because I thought it normally operated like that.

Thats to @andy29847 for the neat picture, if the release lever is spinning freely of the pawl (like mine), the roll pin is broken and the teeth may not properly engage. The sinister part is you may not even know it until its too late, i.e. you're under the Jeep working at the time.

I have and very much like my U.S. Jack stands made in the U.S.A., but I've been meaning to buy a second pair for a while to use purely as a backup so no one jack stand is ever a single point of failure. This thread motivated me to purchase some forklift jack stands that are rated 10 tons: https://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200705283_200705283. This way I have one of each style (rachet and pin). Made in China, but I'm only using them as backups and 10 tons is way way overkill anyway.

the 22 Ton holding pin style is expensive, quite heavy, and does not provide the height adjustability of the ratchet type, but I prefer them over the ratchet type.. no matter how many ANSI certifications a ratchet type jack stand has, I would not get under a vehicle being jacked up with ratchet type jack stands.. hell no..

I installed a 4" Skyjacker system on my '93 Dodge W150 a few years back. I picked up several sections of untreated railroad ties, and stacked these at a few points under the frame, in addition to the jack stands, because I knew I'd be on the floor under that truck for extended periods by myself, and tried to mitigate as much risk as possible. These held the truck very solidly.

Was putting new springs on the Jeep. Jacked it up with the floor jack, put the stand under it and let the jack down. The stand collapsed. Coulda been bad I guess. Took a look at the stand, and a drift pin had broken so that the teeth weren’t fully engaging. These are going in the trash. I can’t even remember where I bought them. The brand is Larin from 2002 according to the date stamp.

I really like these Esco stands as they are solid and are pretty high.

Paranoia has me use 2 stands per side anytime I remove the wheels to work on the suspension. Otherwise I use the jack under the axle and a stand for tire rotation and such.... I never rely on one piece of equipment alone.
