Was successfully able to put out an engine bay fire with my last car using an extinguisher. Had some critters build up some nesting material on one of the heat shields above the turbo and by the time I got to work, the heat turned it into flames. Thankfully, the fire was still contained to just that section and no other damage occurred, but had it spread any further and started to melt all the countless wiring harnesses, I probably would've been better off to just let it continue burning while calling the fire department. Getting something like that repaired likely would've been a nightmare.
That's a good save! And I agree that is one I'd probably try to put out as well. There are so many variables it's not possible to give a concise answer on should you try to put out any particular vehicle fire or not. I think the best advice is it is good to have an extinguisher of some kind so that if a fire occurs you have an option. For my money, the ABC is what I carry as I feel they are the most reliable in most situations and they are affordable, get the biggest one you can reasonably carry and a proper safe mount for it. Mine lives inside of the diabolical slipstream as I like that it *should* remain contained in the event of accident rather thank bonking me in the head. ("you can't reach it while hanging upside down from your seatbelt?! the horror!!")

brewer3Ddesign mount (LINK) for the First Alert bracket.
I like how minimal these are... might switch to them.

FWIW: The M.O.R.E. brackets can also be used for other things (like wine bottles).

Critter nest fires, no problem. Fuel fires, I'll probably spray to see if it is something minor and controllable, if I can reach it in time, then run like heck.

That looks nice, thanks!

Was thinking of going with a hard mount like the M.O.R.E. 2-door mount (LINK) or the brewer3Ddesign mount (LINK) for the First Alert bracket. Think those are literally the only 2 bolt-in solutions for the 2-door.

A soft mount would probably be a quieter option, with less chance for any rattles, but was kinda concerned if it would eventually slide itself down, considering the steeper angle and that I won't be using a padded rollbar cover for it to dig into.

And sometimes I wonder if the JLU owners realize just how spoiled for choices they are in comparison to the much more limited selection of neat shit that what we can order? ?
I went with the M.O.R.E. 2dr mount & a 10lb A-B-C.
The M.O.R.E. mount is a solid piece. I added a few thin adhesive backed foam strips where the extinguisher rides in the M.O.R.E. and it's quiet as can be. ?

I have a Kidde 408-368064 mounting bracket horizontally placed on the roof rack with a 5 lb ABC extinguisher (base of bracket facing forward so that the extinguisher isn't a missile in an accident.) That is an awesome, heavy-duty bracket that I've installed on the outside fender of my Boreas camper and also on a truck for years. People have asked me how I get to it on the roof rack. I show them that I can access it and have it out in under 10 seconds. I bolted the same bracket vertically to my F-150's Leitner rack universal mounting plate and it worked well. I like the larger 5 lb extinguisher. I also have a fire blanket hanging from my interior cargo net in the back area in the Jeep. I keep the same extinguisher and blanket in the kitchen as well. Like the pepper community says - I'd rather have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. Also, two is one and one is none when an equipment failure occurs. I do need to figure out a solution for inside the Jeep that is within reach of the driver - maybe 2.5 lb ABC or an Element mounted under the seat.

I found exactly what I was looking for... 5 lb Co2. Found it at a used machinery dealer for $30. It's a $200+ extinguisher new. It was serviced a year ago and i weighed it within the weight tolerance for a full charge. Now I'll fabricate a bracket to hold this 12 lb beast.

The worst is when they don't even acknowledge the 'U' like this product, but instead bury the '4-door only' somewhere in the description...

If you don’t want to fabricate, H3R makes a JLU specific mount for both driver and passenger side

I wasn't able to find anything that I was happy with on the net. That H3R bracket did give me an idea, but I want to pick up the two 8mm threaded holes under the bar cover as well. All the trick aluminum billet stuff is for tiny extinguishers. There really isn't a good solution for this big ol 5 lb Co2 extinguisher. I even looked at the bottle mounts for "scuba" tanks. They don't have quick releases, of course.

I have access to a full fabrication company (and employees) that make this kind of stuff for the industry. Between me and a genius friend, we'll come up with mount and fabricate it. My friend that owns the shop said they did some mounts for a vehicle manufacturer and the standard that had to be met was 40G (crash) retention.

I figured you would come up with something better but thought I’d throw it out there
