I figure they can simply turn the clutch lever if they want to pull out and steal the winch rope.
If they want to operate it to mess around, they have to have the FOB to turn on the aux switch to power the solenoid to give power to the winch, or mess around connecting power to the solenoid otherwise.
Don't really know why anyone would want to turn the winch on anyway - they'd need the controller to do anything - other than run the rope out and steal the rope (and they can do that with no power to the winch)

Nice thing is if I have the snow plow on my JT, I can drop the snow plow down, remove the controller and wish 'em luck. It takes a controller that has my code in it to operate the plow. They'd make a heck of a lot of racket driving off with the plow down.

The switch would be easier, but my primary goal is to streamline the winch itself. I was just wondering if there is an advantage to adding the solenoid or switch as well as removing the controller or if it would be duplicitous.
Good point about them opening the hood. I'll keep the switch in mind for another mod.

Here's a question for all of youse - I am in the process of moving the controller (contact) off my Warn Zeon 12,000 from the top of the winch to inside the engine compartment. I'm trying to to minimize/conceal the presence of the winch to deter theft, being targeted, etc.
Once I move the controller inside, will this suffice to remove power from the winch (which is what this thread is about, if I'm reading it right)? From my understanding, by doing this I will only have power at the winch when it's in use - disabling the ability for others to power it up from outside, as well as keeping power from the winch in the event of a collision.
Am I right or wrong on my thoughts here?
Opinions and input appreciated.
Is your concern regarding theft is where you park your jeep at home?

I know this is off subject probably not what you are looking for but if you are interested in a little added protection while you are at home. I've been using an outdoor motion activated annunciator for a number of things for years. It will definitely let you know if someone is messing around with your jeep. Critters will set it off so you would want to adjust the height correctly and camouflage the motion sensor.

I think that’s basically the same as putting in one of those warn or other solenoids..
I guess for the theoretical situation where the winch controller solenoid fails, it’s nice to have a backup disconnect.

Home is my safe space. Miles off the beaten path on a dead end, camera system, and a few other "protection" items in place let me sleep nicely. But I do like your system - very nicely done.
Theft concerns are when I leave my rig at trailheads unattended. Also, when I'm traveling south of the border having the winch hidden from plain view is a preventative move. It's not hidden from anyone that knows Jeeps but the generic bad guy may walk on by looking for an easier target.
Maybe.

I use a wingnut. When not in use, I cover the positive wire with a rubber tube and tuck it out of the way.

I settled on this after learning that Warn recommends wiring the winch directly to the battery, and a fuse/solenoid/switch can fail when it's most inconvenient.
Shoot…this is perfect!

Yup, I’ve got a wing nut on mine. Pop the hood at the start of the trail and hook it up while I air down. Pop it off when I’m airing up. Simple, easy and almost free.
Is it an M8 1.25 wingnut? Too lazy to go check. ?
