Hi all,
2022 JLUR. Upsized slightly from stock 285/70 to 315/70 tires. The 315 tire is about 26 pounds heavier (just factoring the weight of the rubber itself, not the air). The spare is rubbing on the bumper and I'm considering a tire relocation bracket. But I'm wondering if that's enough, or if I should be going with a full tailgate reinforcement kit. Obviously I'd rather spend less if the bracket is all I need. I will never go beyond 35s, although at some point I will likely go to the slightly heavier 10-ply Load Range E tire for severe duty gravel roads. Can I get away with just the bracket? Nearly $900 for the full kit is well over my budget.

curious what 315/70-17 (not in an e rated tire) weighs 26 lbs more than the stock 285/70-17? stock is around 51-52lbs. I have an e rated 255/85-17 ie 35x10 and total weight of tire and wheel is just over the 85lb recommended rating..

I don't have a scale and didn't measure it personally, but just going by manufacturers' ratings, Tiresize.com says the 285 BFG KO2s are 50.2 pounds, and the 315 AT4Ws are 75.7 pounds. Again, just the weights of the tires themselves. I'm using the same (factory) rim, so the only differences would be the mass of the actual rubber, plus the difference in the mass of the air in the new bigger 315. Maths and physics make my head explode, so I don't know what that would come out to, but I doubt it's a huge difference.

that is a great tire but they are on the heavy side. Look at a Toyo AT3 which is a similar tire or toyo rt trail and save a quite a bit of weight.

oh and I think air is light enough it would only add an ounce or less at most......:)

I have the TerraFlex adjustable spare, without the full alpha HD hinge/gate reinforcement.
TerraFlex rates the spare mount @100#, my combo with 37" MT BBAT + Method 701 is 110#.
I have taken this from commuting to wheeling and back without any issue, note this includes proper black trails in the mountains of WV, PA, NC, etc
As of now no issues, but I will eventually get around to adding the hinge/gate reinforcement just for my own "it's done" mentality.

TLDR: I have 110# on my gate with the TFlex adjustable mount, they rate for 100#, seems solid to me at current weight.

I got just the Teraflex relocation bracket when I moved up to 37" tires. It worked, but I could tell the OEM hinges were struggling to support the weight. Could feel the gate sagging and it seemed like something might bend or break soon if I didn't do more to address the hinges. So I got a Rough Country tailgate reinforcement, and used that for a couple weeks but it honestly didn't really seem like it was any better than before. So I finally bit the bullet and bought the Teraflex reinforcement kit. Now it's awesome. It holds my 37" spare and feels like I could also pullups on the tailgate and it would be fine.

Long story short, trying to save money by buying only the bare minimum I thought I needed ended up costing about $250 more than if I had just bought the relocation bracket and reinforcement together in the first place.

Admittedly, it wasn't fun spending $1200 on a spare tire mounting solution, there were lots of other things I would've rather spent that money on. But it was worth it, and I'm glad I did it. Sunk that nail with a sledge hammer, now it's not a thing I'll ever have to worry about again, even if I end up doing 38's or 40's someday.

Sorry, perhaps I wasn't clear. I put the Falkens on last week along with a Clayton lift kit, I just want to ensure I can carry the new 315 spare without damaging the tailgate or hinges. I'm not asking for a way to save weight, just a way to distribute the heavier weight back there properly and evenly.

Teraflex Alpha going on tomorrow, to replace the featherweight Teraflex brackets, that replaced the ~ 15 lb RC relocation still new in the box. You are already well over recommended weight and thinking of heavier next time. Do it right once, not three times like I did, wasting money, time, and effort.
plus gambling with potential gate problems before doing it right. 🤔
plus the Teraflex is adjustable shoud you change wheels to a different offset/width. 👍
I’m just installing the carrier to eliminate camera/
sensor issues, reinforcement not required with an 80 lb combo (forged 21 lb 8.5” - 1mm, and 59 lb Toyo AT3 35/12.50/C) — Teraflex reinforcement can be added in the future if needed.

get a tire swing, the relocation brackets still have the same weak spot, the pinch welds

I agree a tire swing would be the best idea, but the budget is very, very low after the lift/tires/etc last week. Next cash influx won't really happen until I sell my old WK2 and my busy season in November. I can afford a couple of hundred, tops, not four-figures. Plus I still need skids and rock sliders.

For under $200 the best option is the Teraflex aluminum relocation brackets for ~ $135-50. They add maybe a couple pounds. Even come with a spacer kit for the spare stabilizers. Served well with a 90 lb combo until the new wheels with a 1 offset.

i used amazons version of the mopar kit for "reinforcement" and relocation for my 35s, it did its job, tailgate closes, tires up off the bumper, it's fine. maybe some day i'll put money into a fancier kit, but probably not.
