You don't need to reinforce the hinge to support 35s. You just need a basic tailgate reinforcement to help prevent warping. Go look at any stock 392 or Xtreme Recon JL. You can get knockoff tailgate reinforcements for like $100.

I also suggest the Teraflex Alpha for wheel placement. I've seen many here for under $200. It's really solid and adjustable.

Owned an XR with the 35s for about 2 years. I agree with this. No need for hinge reinforcement with 35s.

Went to 37s, and even then, hinge was good IMO... but then I dragged the spare on an obstacle and my hinges are now shot. My fault... but i bet upgraded hinges would have handled the hit.
You do need reinforcement with 35s. The stock tailgate can only support 85# the XR has reinforcement, albeit Mopar. It won't fail instantly but thise hinges will get sloppy.
And if you have a proper reinforcement, dragging on an obstacle isn't a big deal either.

OP, the CAV FAB is great and super beefy.

Do you have an example of that ever happening on a JL? IMO it's all a scare tactic to sell aftermarket parts and the XR using the gate support is just to clear overstocked inventory. The JL gate and hinges are A LOT stronger than the JK gate and hinges and people have been running 35s on their stock JK carriers for almost 20 years now.

Heavy wheel, 35" tire, fuel and water put me at about 160lbs on my stock JL gate and hinges. I drove it like this for over a year on a lot of off-road trails and never had an issue with the gate or hinges getting "sloppy", sagging, etc.

@Jeeperz Kreeperz this is what the 3rd brake light looks like when adjusted for a 35" tire on the stock carrier.

The OP stated they do not plan to wheel their jeep so it is not necessary

I disagree and have real world experience. Running a Toyo Open Country ATII on a Black Rhino Barstow 17x9.5 -18 for over 60k mile now. This includes wheeling on the rocks. Only thing I added was a latch limiter and made sure to extend the stops so they are tight against the tire. You don't need a reinforcement until you go to a 37" tire at a minimum.

And I don't have reinforcement with my 37" Tire either ... I did put the Teraflex Adjustable Tire Carrier to lift to be over the Rear Steel Bumper. I KNOW I will not be doing any major off-roading any time soon and will put the full Teraflex HD Alpha Reinforcement when I plan to. for now, I am not stupid about how I close the tailgate AND there tire is firmly in place against the rubber bump stop.

I got Rusty's offroad tire carrier that is in the "To be installed list", it says its compatible with 4Xe but I did not carefully look at the install doc to see what they are doing with the speaker. OP got me thinking. O well, worst case scenario that dumb thing gets tossed
