Just replaced the worn out 33” OEM BFG K02 tires with some new aftermarket wheels and 35” tires. Here are the details:
  • 2021 JL Rubicon 4xe
  • Black Rhino Overland Wheels: 17x8.0, +30mm offset (approx 32 pounds)
  • Falken Wildpeak AT4W Tires: 35x11.5x17 (approx 68 pounds)
Objectives:
  • Reinforce tailgate & hinges to handle 100 pound wheel/tire combo + Trailgator tailgate table
  • No planned rock crawling. Used as daily driver, snowy conditions in winter, towing camper in summer
  • Leave 4xe passenger warning speaker in factory location in tailgate (I see some kits are not compatible with 4xe for this reason)
  • Ideally, a kit that will move the tire up, but will NOT move the tire out farther away from the tailgate (I have an expensive bike rack that just barely fits folded up against the current OEM 33” spare tire. This is not a dealbreaker - but if there’s a kit that keeps the same distance from tailgate, or maybe even less, that would be preferred).
  • Preferably looking at mods that will not break the bank. Wheels and tires are expensive enough!
I’m reading that I might need the following:

1. Tailgate reinforcement kit
2. Hinge reinforcement kit (if not part of tailgate reinforcement kit)
3. Spare tire relocation kit
4. Third brake light relocation kit (if not part of spare tire relocation kit)

Any suggestions on which kit(s) to use?

While I hate to say it this is one part that Teraflex does a nice job on. They have the reinforcement hinge kit and the relocation kit. The relocation can be used by itself to raise the tire.

The reinforcement/hinge setup is a nice cast part as well and fits very well.

Downside is $1400 for the two kits.

I have the complete Teraflex kit on both my Jeeps and its excellent. Looks good and works perfect. I have 38" tires on both Jeeps.

Thanks @oceanblue2019 and @JeepinAZ, but $1,400 is definitely too far out of budget.

I’m seeing the Mopar tailgate reinforcement kit 82215356ac can be had for around $500.

Third brake light relocation kits are less than $100.

Does anyone know of a tire relocation kit that does NOT move the tire outward away from the tailgate - but only moves it up? I just need ‘up’, not ‘out’. And I only need less than 1” of ’up’ to clear the bumper.

The Terraflex carrier and HD Hinge, is one of the best. This PIC is from Amazon, but many of our Vendors carry it. Maybe even at a better price..not sure:

My Jeep came with the Mopar reinforcement. It does not come with better hinges and simply piggybacks the factory hinges. You can get these for under $150 used quite often when guys upgrade to bigger tires and need a real reinforcement. My tailgate squeaks and rattles and eventually this thing will get replaced.

For a relocation the Teraflex Alpha allows up and also a depth adjustment to keep the tire as sucked in as possible. I don't know of others that allows the depth to be adjusted inward. I'm running this part and been very happy with it.

I have the mopar HD hinge and just added a $80 Rough Country relocation bracket..people bag on Rough country but it is a nice piece and made in the usa and super easy to mount and will allow a 37" tire..the jl hinge is stronger than the jk's were and with the HD hinge addition should be good.

CavFab all day. Has a bracket for the 4XE speaker. I went from stock 33s on stock wheels to MT BB AT 35s on Method 0mm offset wheels and my tire is actually closer to the gate than the stock mount. I can swing on it for days. My bike rack still works without mods. The carrier comes raw metal. Spend $100 on some Steel-It rattle can paint and do a half-way decent job and it will look great. The CavFab bumper in the pictures is DIY black Steel-It. I had the carrier powder coated to match the Jeep.

I was in a similar situation about 18 months ago. Went to 35s on Fuel wheels. I think the listed weights combine to around 96 pounds. The wheels are 17x9 too. I have the Teraflex Alpha relocation bracket without the tailgate/hinge reinforcement bracket. It has worked well. In fact relocating the third brake light to inside the wheel allows for better sight picture in the rear view mirror. Teraflex does offer a bracket for the 4xe speaker too. I run moderate 5-6 trails in mine without issue so far. My desire is to add the Teraflex reinforcement before my luck runs out but the price kills me every time I consider ordering it.

Installation was easy. Good instructions. I estimated the lug bolt locations perfectly the first time and got the spacing to bump stops right too. Have to remember to remove the third brake light when you leave it for five tire rotation. Not saying your tailgate won't have an issue with only the carrier. Merely stating mine hasn't.

The Mopar reinforcement only adds more weight to the hinges (which are your weak link).

The 3rd break light on your stock carrier is adjustable for 35" tires.

The stock tire carrier, gate, and hinges can handle a 35" tire. I would test-fit your new wheel/tire combo. If it clears the bumper, adjust your 3rd brake light and call it good. If it doesn't clear the bumper, get a relocation bracket. https://teraflex.com/jl-spare-tire-relocation-bracket-kit.html

If you go to 37s or larger in the future, save up for the Teraflex HD tire carrier w/ Alpha mount. https://www.amazon.com/TeraFlex-Alu...cphy=9031238&hvtargid=pla-2281435181178&psc=1

You don't need to reinforce the hinge to support 35s. You just need a basic tailgate reinforcement to help prevent warping. Go look at any stock 392 or Xtreme Recon JL. You can get knockoff tailgate reinforcements for like $100.

I also suggest the Teraflex Alpha for wheel placement. I've seen many here for under $200. It's really solid and adjustable.

Owned an XR with the 35s for about 2 years. I agree with this. No need for hinge reinforcement with 35s.

Went to 37s, and even then, hinge was good IMO... but then I dragged the spare on an obstacle and my hinges are now shot. My fault... but i bet upgraded hinges would have handled the hit.

Rugged Ridge reinforced hinges are good for the price. They can be had with hinges only, or with the tire carrier. The tire carrier also comes with 3rd brake light relocation. If you dont opt for the tire carrier, the hinges is compatible with other carrier relocation brackets. For 35s, you dont need the 3rd brake light relocation.

I dont have experience with Rugged Ridge tire carrier, or any special requirements for 4XE trim. But I pair their hinges with Teraflex tire carrier and they work great together. The hinges are solid and affordable.

Another vote for Cavfab. I replaced my Mopar reinforcement for the substantially stronger Cavfab to carry my 37 inch spare.

NONE ... Ran with 315/70R17 Wildpeak AT3Ws with AEV JK Borah Wheels for 2 years no issue!!! The only thing is I have the steel Rear Bumper and had to air down just a little (like to 25 PSI)

ALSO I am now running just the Teraflex Adjustable Tire Carrier with 37x12.5R17 Wildpeak AT4Ws with same AEV Wheels (113 Lbs) and the tailgate is fine.
