I will be the odd one out here, I believe biggest issue is when you drop off a ledge and land on your spare tire using a tailgate mounted bracket, you will bend your tailgate, 1st 1000 miles, with a 37 mounted, dashboards and potholes etc. No squeaks or rattles, UNTIL I landed on the spare tire after a big drop and 1500 lbs of jeep stopped downward movement as it bent my tailgate in 4 places, just outside of the 3/16 mounting platform...instant rattle and tailgate sits 1_4 inch lower when opened at vatvh

Running a Rough country relocation bracket and made the tire stops longer to be tight against the tire. Running Black Rhino Barstow 17x19.5 -18 offset and a Toyo Open Country AT II. have had this setup for about 70k now. Only other after market part I use is a latch limiter. I wheel on the rocks and unless I hit a good size pothole no rattles.

I’ve been running this Tyler Auto kit for a couple of years now; it includes everything you said you need, and the existing stock tire carrier bolts onto this. I’ve had zero issues with it, and none of what people complain about in the reviews.

Better yet, it’s less than $300 total.

I was going to go with that one too...just really did not want to disassemble my SquadBox to install so decided to just do the Teraflex Adjustable Tire Carrier instead.

Yes Marshall, that would be a real pain, as the Tyger comes with replacement hinges. There’s no way to do it without partially removing the passenger sidewall at the tailgate, to remove the stock hinges and bolt-on the new hinges.

CavFab all day long. You have to DIY finish the raw steel, but it is adjustable for both height and however close you want to pull it in to the tailgate. Tag and camera relocation bracket comes with.
Been running a 37" on it for a few years and is just the same as the day I installed it.

Thanks all! Great info!

Some comments:
the jl hinge is stronger than the jk's were and with the HD hinge addition should be good.
Good to know!

CavFab all day. Has a bracket for the 4XE speaker
That CavFab unit looks great. However, I’m super busy right now and looking for a quick install before a camping trip coming up very soon. The DIY paint and the 4xe speaker both would add time to install (the 4xe speaker especially because I have a Trailgater tailgate table mounted on the interior of the tailgate, and it is a pain to install with the clips that break, etc.)

The 3rd break light on your stock carrier is adjustable for 35" tires.

The stock tire carrier, gate, and hinges can handle a 35" tire. I would test-fit your new wheel/tire combo. If it clears the bumper, adjust your 3rd brake light and call it good. If it doesn't clear the bumper, get a relocation bracket. https://teraflex.com/jl-spare-tire-relocation-bracket-kit.html
I did a test fit before the original post. This 35” tire wouldn’t fit. Part of the reason might be the particular tire, part might be because I have a steel OEM rear bumper. And it looked like the brake light was going to be partially blocked at its highest height.

You don't need to reinforce the hinge to support 35s. You just need a basic tailgate reinforcement to help prevent warping.
Probably true for just the 35” wheel/tire combo. But I also have a trailgater tailgate table (stainless steel, aluminum, and wood), and I occasionally add a 22” Partner cookstove and pots/pans/food. So, it probably is seeing 120 pounds of dynamic weight (68lb tire + 32lb wheel + 20lb trailgater table), when driving. But when camping, I add another 30lb or so with stove/food/cookware (of course, this 150lb amount is only static, never dynamic)

Owned an XR with the 35s for about 2 years. I agree with this. No need for hinge reinforcement with 35s.
See message above re: 120lb dynamic & 150lb static weight on tailgate.

I dont have experience with Rugged Ridge tire carrier, or any special requirements for 4XE trim.
According to their website it is not compatible with 4xe.

NONE ... Ran with 315/70R17 Wildpeak AT3Ws with AEV JK Borah Wheels for 2 years no issue!!! The only thing is I have the steel Rear Bumper and had to air down just a little (like to 25 PSI)
Great idea. I have the steel bumper too. I’ll try airing down the AT4W to see if I can get it to fit.

I found good deals on the two Mopar kits (reinforcement and tire relocation). So I’m going to give those a shot. Love the looks of the Teraflex, the CavFab, and the Rugged Ridge. Those all look like robust solutions - better than Mopar.

Reasons I went with Mopar:
Compatible with 4xe
No need to uninstall Trailgater table
Simpler install
Maintains same distance of tire away from tailgate (allows me to fold my bike rack)
”Reasonable” cost

Thanks all for the education!

No rock crawling for me. So, the risk of dropping off a ledge is considerably reduced!

Thanks @oceanblue2019 and @JeepinAZ, but $1,400 is definitely too far out of budget.

I’m seeing the Mopar tailgate reinforcement kit 82215356ac can be had for around $500.

Third brake light relocation kits are less than $100.

Does anyone know of a tire relocation kit that does NOT move the tire outward away from the tailgate - but only moves it up? I just need ‘up’, not ‘out’. And I only need less than 1” of ’up’ to clear the bumper.
Teraflex.

Buy once, pain once.

I have 35s on my JLUR 4xe and after a bit of off-roading the tailgate did settle a little lower.

I closed the tailgate, put painters tape across the opening with a sharpie line and cut it, opened the gate and measured the small drop. Took the tire off and loosened the hinge to adjust it up by the amount it was dropping and tightened hinge down. Problem solved.

I’ve done serious rock crawling and no further tailgate sag or damage. You will need spare tire bump stop extensions if the factory bumps don’t touch the tire.. so there’s no wiggle.

I’ve heard you should keep your spare at low PSI so it can flex if this happens. I’m keeping mine at like 15. Curious if yours was at street pressure like 36?

I was in the same boat earlier this year. I picked up the imitation Mopar reinforcement bracket from Amazon for about $100. The bracket is great, the bolts were hex and easy to strip. I swapped them out for some better bolts and all is good. I initially ran the factory tire mount with my spare aired way down. It fit and worked ok, but I wasn’t happy with it. I found the Teraflex carrier on Amazon for around $300 and jumped on it. It is great. The tire rides closer to the tailgate for stability and is easily height adjustable. I even learned to like the brake light relocation. It does provide a better view. I am running the heavy MT BB ATs with a set of method semi-locking rims. It is a heavy combo and everything works great. It is a better setup than the Mopar stuff and probably a bit cheaper.

Good luck!

I put on one of the knockoffs shown in a post above and the photo below. My 35"x11.50 Toyos fit perfectly. I haven't noticed any flex. I deleted the factory 3rd brake light and installed a "Ring of fire" under the spare. There was a post in this Jeep forum that influenced me to make this change. One of the recommendations in that post was to replace the vendor supplied hardware with higher quality bolts.
