I just filled my '21 Rubi 's DEF tank this afternoon for the second time since delivery. Currently at 6500 miles. First DEF fill was at 3000 miles (full at delivery). 8.753 gallons total; 745 miles per gallon. Pretty much at the 3% fuel consumption mentioned previously. I too feel misled by Jeep that refills would only be required every 10k with oil changes. My '18 WK2 ecodiesel would go 10k between, but with a 30% larger DEF tank. Still had a much lower consumption rate than the JL.

Nice to see someone actually calculate out their DEF use. Too many people complain and yet have NO idea what their use is.

I was doing some research into how to decode the batch/date codes that some DEF manufacturers use for their products in relation to another thread and came across this.

How much DEF will I need?

Your DEF consumption will be approximately 2-6% of your diesel fuel consumption (approx 2-6 gallons for every 100 gallons of diesel used.) The newer model trucks will consume more DEF but offer better fuel mileage.

They're my DEF supplier so maybe I can convince them to give me a decoder ring.

That would seem to track with my experience too, then. Though my Jeep went into the dealership last week at 6600 miles with an oil leak on the driver's side of the block.

I heard back from my supplier today re: the date codes. The DEF I use is in 2.5 gallon jugs (we purchase directly from the manufacturer) and have the codes stamped on the jugs (example: TAB20-DE0603). TAB is the manufacture location, 20 is the 2-digit year, they didn’t elaborate on what the DE signifies, and the 0603 is mmdd so June 3rd. I don’t know if there is any relevance for other OEMs so it is what it is.

Why can’t it be as easy as a quart of milk? Seems like they’re turning a routine pop fly into a circus catch.

We burned through the 3/4 tank of def that the jeep had from new. Granted today I towed this giant parachute 450 miles through the winds this cold front is bringing in. Went through nearly 3 full tanks of fuel 🤣. Only tow this with the top on, on slow roads. However I ended up winning both auctions that I bid on recently on govplanet. Which meant the trailer had to go on the interstate as is🙃

Nice trailer by the way. Looks great behind your Jeep. Wow, does it have tongue height!

I have driven mine a little over 3,000 miles and mine has moved less than a 1/4". Still hanging out at just under half a tank of DEF.

Thanks!
Yeah the M1102 is meant to hook up to a HMMWV, so the lunette ring is at 29.5" off the ground, when level. Leaving it be and using the riser hitch for this first trip to Moab and Ouray in July. However afterwards I am going to convert the hydraulic surge brakes to electric while installing a 3500lb axle, lower the mount/couple and switch to either a max coupler or cruisemaster Do35 coupling. Granted once we finally lift and go 37's it may be just about perfect height as it sits.

Unfortunately the hitch has so much rise that the spare won't fit on at the same time

I refilled mine last night for the first time at around 3,700 miles. I was 300ish miles from a restart. 2.5 gallons filled it up to 3/4 of a tank. I was thinking maybe it wasn't topped off on the first fill but after reading some on here my use seems somewhat typical.

I've had my Jeep for almost 2 months. I've put over 7100 miles on it and have put in 7 gallons of DEF. I've towed for most of that so I kind of expected it.

Bought the vehicle and drove it to Vegas. 27 mpg

Towed about 2000 lbs from Vegas to Denver. 19 mpg

Built up the Jeep did some other things (to include 37's). Drove around for 4 weeks without a trailer. 22 mpg

Then towed about 2500 lbs from Denver to my home in Anchorage. 18.4 mpg (put the factory 33's back on for this trip).

So if I consider 1 gallon of Def fluid per thousand miles normal, then it's good. Those written earlier that they go 10k miles between fills of their DEF with a 10 gal tank.....then I'm right on par.

I have the opposite problem: I accidently ordered a 4-pack of 2.5 gallon jugs (damn that one touch buy button on Amazon). I only drive about 6,000 miles/per year, so now I'm virtually willing the DEF level to drop so my "inventory" doesn't go stale.

Guess you gotta drive the jeep a bunch now. Sounds like a good problem to have!
