If it's like my Cherokee (Still waiting for my Willys to arrive) there are a couple factors involved with Start/Stop:
Engine temp - must be at a certain temp to activate
Battery Charge - if you haven't driven your Jeep in a bit the (weak-a$$ from the factory) battery/ies may be below the charge level for ESS to work properly and may take a bit of driving to bring it up to level.

If I cycle through my info screen on the dash it'll tell me which issue is keeping the Start/Stop from operating. My battery in the Cherokee is 6 years old. Starts fine every time, but does not currently support S/S due to charge level. It sits at 14+/- volts when driving. It will work when I run it through a conditioning cycle on my charger.

Usually when mine doesn't work it's either because the cabin heating/cooling is still getting things to temp or because I'm at too much of an incline (~4 or 5° angle, which isn't much around here). Or because I turned it off and forgot, or every once in a while it won't work without stating a reason other than "not ready" ?‍♂

Scroll to the page on the instrument cluster and it will tell you exactly why.

It also won't activate if you are pressing lightly on the brake....there is a switch in the brake pedal mechanism that activates it if conditions are favorable for SS to work.

My start/stop idle kill switch went out and I was very happy about that until I learned that both of my batteries needed replaced a month later-under warranty-when it was a year and a half old.

I find the steering wheel not being straight is the #1 reason it doesn't work. Beyond the other conditions everyone have mentioned.

My SS stopped working in my 21 JT diesel about a year ago. Took it to the dealer they did a software upgrade. Still didn't work. I didn't take it back. I seperated my batteries and did a load test both were fine. No lights or trouble codes.

The best mod any JL owner can do is disabling stop/start and permanently deleting the battery. What an absolute fucking worthless "feature" (read: will leave you stranded one day) on the JL. There is literally no benefit to leaving it enabled. None. Dont even start with gas savings. The money you spend to replace the stupid piece of shit second battery will cost you 100x more than you save in gas.

It exists for one purpose, and one purpose only - to optimize gas usage during one particular fuel consumption test so that the EPA will bump the city MPG printed on the window sticker up by about 1 mpg. It serves zero benefit to the consumer and will almost never actually save you any gas. Just puts additional strain on things, and is another expensive maintenance item to deal with.
