Dont even start with gas savings.

On a proper hybrid car, stopping and starting the engine is a piece of cake since the electric system can effectively push start the car whenever. The 48V jeeps also do that lol.

AFAIK the 12v engine start-stop system is more aimed at reducing idle emissions.

Theoretically, all of the other reasons ESS doesn't automatically trigger at every stop has to do with it not being worth it. Unfortunately, I agree here - the computer doesn't really have enough information to make a GOOD decision on when to shut the engine off. It doesn't know when you're stopping to shift into reverse to park in your driveway, or stopping at a red light that takes 5 minutes to change.

The best mod any JL owner can do is disabling stop/start and permanently deleting the battery. What an absolute fucking worthless "feature" (read: will leave you stranded one day) on the JL. There is literally no benefit to leaving it enabled. None. Dont even start with gas savings. The money you spend to replace the stupid piece of shit second battery will cost you 100x more than you save in gas.

Without fail, if mine turns off at a crosswalk with an old lady crossing the street, it will randomly kick back on when she is right in front of my bumper.

I'm in no way formally defending ESS, but as a Software Engineer who helped design Engine Control Modules for Chrysler back in the late 2000's early 20-Teen model years it was a constant struggle with always increasing and ever more stringent emission and CAFE standards (really forced EPA mandates). The ESS system is yet just another subtle way to nail in the ICE coffin.

In my opinion (today), no true blue automotive engineer in their right mind would have ever implemented such a crappy mechanism to squeeze out such a small savings in both decreased emissions (per trip) or increased fuel mileage (per tank). This has all the earmarks of an overzealous regulatory environment to produce desired results (over the entire vehicle production lifetime), and consumer input was not only futile but totally and completely irrelevant.

It surprises me that a disable switch was even designed in at all, or even more amazing is that there are (as yet) no fines or penalties enforced for the end-user to actively defeat such an environmentally friendly system.

I would speculate that this is a purposefully 'designed-in' system (especially warts and all) to ruefully get people to hate their ICE vehicles even more. Thus indirectly promoting more EV acceptance, even albeit reluctantly.

I have personally just replaced my third AUX battery in my 2019 JL Sport 3.6L. Sure, by using and not defeating my ESS system I can claim I'm helping to save the planet in a very small but unfortunately more expensive way.

I'll also admit that I'm certainly the strange oddball who really doesn't mind the silence while stopped at traffic lights. ESS gives my driving experience a whole other dimension when analyzing intersection dynamics and determining either by brake foot pressure or Autostick gear selection in deciding to let the Engine Controller shut the engine off. For me (and maybe only me) I rather tend to have fun playing this silly game. Call me crazy. I can most assuredly prove it.

But no truer words have ever been spoken: "The money you spend to replace the stupid piece of shit second battery will cost you 100x more than you save in gas."

But I will also state that replacing even one EV battery will cost you even more by yet another order of magnitude. So be extremely careful what you wish for. Saving the planet is going to be a very (very) expensive proposition. At least the way it's currently being mandated.

Where are the conversations for a more reasoned approach? Or will we all have to go broke in the process?

The cost of what you save in fuel is the very least of the overall ESS objective.
