It's not a fun day when it happens. I have gone back to stock axle shafts instead of chromoly because in the future I would rather twist or snap an axle shaft than break another ring gear tooth. A lot easier to fix on the trail and less expensive.
I had the same thought years back but When I snapped axles it wasn’t so easy, or cheap. Both times I snapped off axles, they snapped at the splines so the carrier still had to come out to fish out the pieces. It would have been cheaper for me to do new R&P both times.

If you are upgrading beyond 33s (285s), from experience I always advise going straight to 37s. The difference in unsprung wright is negligible, usually about 6 pounds per tire. The differences in diameter and rolling circumference is likewise slight. The big jump is when you go beyond 33s. This is when you have to start thinking gears. The big benefit is ride quality, a tiny bit of extra clearance on the trail, etc.

Going beyond 33 means suspension , gears etc. If that’s your plan and you do your homework then just calculate in the cost of 37s and go for it.

So, being a diesel, I'm under the impression that swapping gears may not necessarily be needed. I believe many are running on the stock gearing with 37's......However, I would love to hear from any 3.0 owners that are running 37's......Have you regeared? If so, did you drive it prior to regearing or did you jump to 37's and regear at the same time?

The shop I'm working with (totally planning on going with 37's) has basically told me it's likely not needed and if I later want to, I can do so vs doing it now.

i went to 35s without regearing but planned to.
i then changed to 37s, and quickly decided to regear.

it may have all the torque of a diesel, but i much prefer to have all the coolants and lubricants circulating as they were designed to be at any given load.
and although with 4.56s it’s geared a little deeper than it was stock, i find the driveability much improved over what it was with 3.73s.
