Thanks for this writeup and suggestions! My son went to flip the passenger side down over the weekend and it just fell out. Mine is a base Sport so I don't have any wiring to contend with, so it should be a simple fix. I have to go to Lowe's for a new basement railing so I'll look for the 8mm collar and fix it up. Will post some pics!

Well, I got my repair done over the weekend. Honestly, the hardest part was finding a hardware store that had the collar in stock; I I think I went to 3 or 4 before I finally found it. Mine was easier since I have a base Sport so there's no harness to contend with. I used a combination of the small cutoff blade and then the sanding drum to get the height where I wanted it. Here's a few pics -

I trimmed the plastic end off at the rectangular cutout to expose more of the shaft -

Here's the sleeve on the inside of the trim piece that needs to be cut off -

Can you share what collar you got and where you found it? Thanks

Ah, there it is! 5/16" fits perfectly, that's what I used. The ability to fix the visor for $3 is a win in my book. I bought two because I know sooner or later another one will break - we have two JLs in my house.

The local store I found it in is affiliated with Do It Best Hardware, but I'm not sure if it's a national chain or a Northeast thing. I could not find the collars in my local Lowe's or Home Depot though. Good luck!

My Sun visor fell down when I turned it to the side, so thanks for this excellent DIY thread. This, and the folding seat problem in the 2 door are the only issues I've had in 18,000 miles with my 2018 2 door Sport. Fingers crossed

I have a Base Sport, so no wiring to contend with ; only 2 Torx screws on the underside of the visor, and it pulls right off. The hollow tube looked just right for a 1/4 NF tap, ; after trimming plastic as others did, I tapped the tube, found a 1/4 ID washer that fit in the recess, one that matched the OD, and a fiber washer as a spacer. The fastener bottoms out, so no pressure on washers/ spacers. Used JB Weld on the threadedI ID of the tube. A dab of silicone grease on the rotating stem. Not nearly as elegant as some, but surely better than whoever designed the original..

Nice! Seems to be several ways to out-engineer FCA :)

will this work? its 5/16" bore size
That looks great Kev. Makes it easier on those of us with wiring up to the visor. Any chance that you have an online source?

Later,
Johnny
