We live in a canyon and park outdoors. Our bobcats, foxes, coyotes, and rattlesnakes help with rodent control, but they can"t get em all. We noticed little white particles on the passenger-side floor mat the first spring after we got our JL Rubicon. I checked it out and found that the insulation and cabin air filter were being chewed up by field mice, but they hadn’t gotten past the filter yet. The service manager at our local Mopar dealership told us he’d seen this before and that we’d have to wait until they got through the filter and chewed up the wiring, when it would be covered under warranty. He said nothing could be done about the mice getting in. That kind of stuck in my craw. Something can always be done.
Pulling off the wipers and cowl let me see that the mice were getting in under the cowl on the passenger side, the same pathway fresh air takes to the filter.
I cut a piece of sheet aluminum, rolled it into a tube, riveted it, and squeezed it to fit the space the mice were using. Then I riveted ÂĽ inch hardware cloth over one end of the tube and reinserted it.
I used pest-blocking spray foam to seal the opening around the tube and trimmed off the excess, then reassembled the cowl and wipers. That was four years ago. No mice since.
