How low do you let the tank get, before you fill it up. I know people had issues with many diesel Pickups fuel injection pumps going out, because they let them run as close to empty, before filling up.
The VP44, and CP3 pumps were sensitive to the heated fuel. The fuel gets recirculated, and when it is low, the fuel heats up. Some even suggest the low levels allow trash to get into the system. Me, I can't see that as an issue, because the fuel filter should take care of that issue.
I let it get to 1/4 tank before refilling because I had also read it isn’t good to let them get too low.

Having owned RAM / Cummins pickups with HPCR fuel systems since 2003 MY.....the CP3’s are tougher than nails.

Long story short.....the CP4’s are a mistake....so much so that RAM tried them in their 2500/3500/4500/5500’s between 2019 and 2020.....and it is currently biting them in the asssssssss with recalls and TSB’s.

My previous 2018 RAM 4500 was sold at 473k miles......on the OE lift pumps (it had the 22+52 gallon tanks) CP3, and injectors.....all by performing maintenance by the book with quality Fleetguard and MoPar fuel filters.

Additionally.....I used that truck for running hotshot, below is the amount of fuel that was ran through that truck during my ownership....all 47,344 gallons of it.

Thankfully......RAM went back to the CP3 in 2021. My 2022 RAM 5500 has been rock solid through 24k miles.
I saw some adaptor kits to allow running a CP3 pump with engines designed for the CP4 but didn’t see one specifically for the Wrangler.

I had a 2000 Dodge 2500 with a Cummins and a VP44 pump, and those were crap. Mine went out at 100,000 miles. Along with the tranny, and other high ticket things. I didn't like the thought of constant problems, so I sold it for my current 2006 2500 Dodge w/Cummins. So far, so good. It just keeps on going. But, it only has 180,000 miles on it, and the CP3, with original tranny. Its a good truck.

At the recommendation of the techs in my shop I will be changing the fuel filter every 10k. Still wondering why the manual has the Ram fuel filter change interval at 10k and the JL-JT interval at 20k. Better safe than sorry. Also adding Hotshots EDT with every fillup. Wishing you luck.

From a 2021 RAM 1500 EcoDiesel owner’s manual...under maintenance:

If I'm not mistaken, I believe they use the same filter on the Cummins engine. That uses a lot more fuel so the change interval is half as many miles as our little 3.0.

I just changed mine at 18,000 miles and it was dirty but not excessively so. I do a 6,000 mile oil change interval. I may try changing the filter every other oil change instead of every 3rd.

I figure that it is cheap insurance with the CP4 issues that are out there.

I sold my cp3 truck and keep my vp44 truck. 350k miles. I was just the opposite. The 3rd gens trucks just felt so cheaply made. VP44s are super tough and can be pulled and rebuilt in a day.

And I’d say they are having lots of CP4 issues because my Service Rep called me yesterday and to my complete shock and surprise they had everything in stock at the dealer to swap out my entire fuel system. I might get by Jeep back as early as tonight. The bad news is I will still have a CP4 fuel pump

Thats pretty good man. My dealer had to order two replacement rear shocks for me...could be a week before they come in...

I got the Jeep back They replaced the fuel pump, all the injectors, both fuel rails, fuel supply tubes and fuel filter. They washed it which was a bonus but also refilled all my tires to 40psi which was very noticeable ha. Engine seemed OK coming home. Let’s see how it rides over the next few days. Happy to have it back and hopefully with a longer lasting fuel pump.
