...and here again fellow board members my urban modded no tires Wrangler saves the day.

notires.jpg

No tires, no flats. No flats, no need for spares. No need for spares, no need for tailgate reinforcement.

And when there's traffic I just take this bad boy on nearby uncongested rail road tracks to quickly get where I'm going.;)
Does the tire pressure out of spec indicator get annoying or did you change that in the settings? I don't have my mine yet it is on a train but I'd like to try this mod to save on future tire purchases. Thanks!

;)I turned said tire pressure senor into a heat one...you know that friction on the street can get pretty nasty.

Oh, and while your JL (serious: good luck) is on a train, mine IS the train when I take the aforementioned railroad tracks shortcuts.

Typical FCA crap. My Jeep could literally be transporting\trainsporting itself yet its probably on yours. So inefficient, but appreciated. :cwl:

There's no way I'm hanging a 37" tire on the tailgate. I don't care what anyone says, cantilevering that much weight on the tailgate will eventually cause major issues. Bumper or frame-mounted is the only way to go. It's really pretty simple physics.
So stock rim & tire (33” BFG) for a Rubicon JL has a weight of about 75lbs I believe and years of engineering went into the current design to hold the spare. A 37” BFG weights appproximately 20lbs more with years of engineering as well went into the tailgate reinforcement bracket which per Mopar can hold up to a 37” tire. Since at the time of my JL purchase I was not ready to replace my new stock steel bumpers the reinforcement bracket was the logical next option and I am happy with it...I already had a custom tow plate fabricated for the front stock steel bumper so I could tow it also as at the time there were none available....I agree the price for the reinforcement bracket is ridiculous though.

Some day I may remove both front and rear stock steel bumpers and if so obviously a bumper or frame mounter spare tire holder is the best way to go if you are a serious off roader.

So many options now which is great. Hopefully everyone’s feedback will assist the original poster “CJ7”

I got the Mopar reinforcement kit and relocation bracket (also CHMSL relo kit). All 3 I think were like $600 through my local 4x4 shop.
I'm glad I got it, and everything fits perfectly. I've been wheeling with it and drove through a really rocky river with it. No issues, it still closes like it did from day one. The tailgate is aligned perfectly, and the longer bumpstops included in the key are a perfect fit. I have 37s on there. It also just barely rests on the bumper.

I think if your tire does not touch your bumper, or your tire does not touch your rubber support pads, then you could have issues.

Buying a new rear bumper is on my list, and I plan to try and get one that will continue to give a little kiss to the spare tire, to help further support that weight and prevent any long-term damage.

Even at 75lbs you're looking at too much weight over time. Don't forget, that engineering only has to last as long as the warranty.

I hate mine! With my 37" tire on the back Im pushing 115lbs. Everytime I hit a bump I here it rattle. Ive tried many different things to get it to stop but Ive come to the conclusion that its just too much torque on that door.

Eventually Im going to figure out bumper mounted tire carrier. I love my Rubicon Steel bumper and do not want a mismatched OEM front and aftermarket rear. Hopefully Mopar will reproduce a similar bumper to the Hardrock JK that had an integrated tire carrier.

If you allow/adjust the rear bumper to SUPPORT/CUSHION the spare tire-it'll save the tailgate stress and cut out the noise !

Mine has carried a 37” tire since a few days after I bought the JL. It’s holding okay and I definitely do some wheeling, but I don’t think it is beefy enough to take long term abuse. Definitely wouldn’t want to come down on a rock and catch my tire.

Here is a install video of it. I have it with 37" KO2 tires. I did not relocate the tire carrier since I have the plastic bumper. The 37" KO2 just barely rubs with the plastic bumper. I have hit some good trails and have had no issues. I do plan to eventually get the Poison Spyder rear bumper and tire carrier though. I wouldn't trust it forever if you hit a lot of trails.

I've had it for about 6 months with most of that time a 37/13.5x17 hanging off it. I have the mopar reinforcement and the $80 Rusty's relocation bracket. Seemed silly to spend $300 for 2 brackets that cost maybe $20 to make. No issues, no noise, but when you shut the tailgate, you can see the actual tailgate flexing so a standalone carrier would probably be a better option.
