Weren't older cars generally unsafe as well due to lack of airbags and sufficient restraints rather than lack of crumple zones? I can't imagine a crumple zone being always better than having a steel bar to deflect/absorb impact.
IIHS did this for you. Amazing work they do if you think about it. Look at the test facilities - they're always 'like new' for each test. The info collected from destroyed cars, impact to passengers to even the skid marks on the pavement are all useful information.

Here's a really amazing side by side of old vs. new:

For a YJ, the best I could find was this nice (but very sad) video from a driver of his YJ after it collided with a Toyota Corolla. You can really see the destruction to the body and engine after an impact. I don't know how fast, but I'd guess not too fast, so multiply this damage to imagine what could happen.

Agree completely. Today’s cars are built and designed to be safer than ever.

In addition, standard features such as ABS, airbags, etc. have been proven to save lives.

Nissan was selling a classic version of the Sentra called a Tsuru up until this year I think. Mexico's car safety is more geared towards cheap cars for the people. Here's a crash test of that vs. a new Nissan Versa from the States.

They call it the Sentra that time forgot..

Crash tests for the JK at the driver's corner show the JK engine compartment deflecting the vehicle away from the abutment rather than simply crumpling to absorb the impact.

man, how many tears were shed by the people who had to rig that beautiful old car up, and then ram it into another car? Necessary evil, but man, that is a damn shame.

Just because we're all comparing metaphorical "wallet photos" of crash tests, allow me to provide you with what IMHO, is the standard by which all others should be based. If this example of partial front impact where any more "graceful," we'd have to sip champagne and watch this to classical music.

Seriously: no crash is graceful: but on the continuum of chaos from walking away from an accident to obvious death at the crash scene, this one demonstrates how the Volvo deflects the passenger compartment from the obstacle with more resistive to crumple zones as one gets closer to the passenger compartment.

Of course, I don't seek to trash my beloved Wrangler--just show you where the bar is set. I've tried to cue the link up at the appropriate point in the video.

(watch it a the slowest youtube speed setting)

Thread poster's note: I do not in any way seek to trivialize the harm caused by automobile accidents.

The Jk is actually pretty darn safe overall if you have side airbags. It does surprisingly well in the Small Overlap test for a vehicle that went on sale 11 years ago. The passenger compartment structure and dash remain intact. There are vehicles designed within the last few years with way worse Small Overlap test results.

Sure, the JKs poor headlights and lack of electronic crash mitigation features drive down its overall score, but those don't actually matter in the real world once the crash has happened. Check out the terrible Small Overlap results on current Explorer, 4Runner, '09-15 Honda Pilot, most current pickup trucks just to name a few.

I'd say the JL is going to be very safe.

Curious what percentage of JKs sold actually have airbags given they were optional?

Hmmmm, Definitely would say more do not have them than do given that it is an option...thank goodness they are standard on the JL.
