I'm considering a fire extinguisher before going on the Rubicon. I looked at them and thought that a Co2 would be the way to go. Looking for comments about which kind and size to get, and why you'd pick one type over another.

CO2 does not leave a residue but they are not generally rated for class A (e.g. wood) fires, have limited range, and are less effective in windy conditions (gas is easily dispersed). For an under-the-hood fire, may be a good choice, but I prefer dry powder for general use.

YMMV - Don

I've been intrigued by potassium and other chemical extinguishers like the Element for years. They are still gas (aerosol) best for underhood or similar fires rather than using in the open IME/IMO but, while I have used other similar products, I have never used an Element extinguisher. In the primordial past, KNO3 extinguishers were not allowed in some situations at work (electronics) due to the possibility of corrosion; I have no idea if that is an issue in our application (I tend to doubt it). Not like halon doesn't have it's side effects... And dry powder leaves a mess.

I have a dry powder strapped to the roll cage but am thinking of putting an Element under the seat where I can easily reach it in the event of an engine (or engine-compartment) fire.

Went with an element under my seat. Small, kinda compact. Hope to never find out how well it does or doesn't work.
Out of curiosity, for those that keep them on board all the time, is there a concern that heat built up inside the cabin on a hot summer day with the windows closed might trigger one of these to blow and douse the interior?

Well....the Element WAS attractive. Think I'm probably ending up with a 5lb Co2.

I like the Rugged Ridge mount. It holds a 5lb extinguisher to the rollbar conveniently inside the tailgate.
