There was a fb group that dealt with that topic. It's the only group I've joined where the question was "Are you a nark?" I'm pretty sure the group is gone.

We discuss lots of things that are illegal here. Hell, I told an FBI agent point blank that I planned on continuing to break the law by speeding. I just planned on not getting caught. No, FBI agents do not have a sense of humor.

This topic, however, might be crossing the line.

The only impact it will have is by reducing systemic complexity from a maintenance point of view. From a MPG point of view it will have no impact to negative impact - in that you will always have a CEL and probably limp mode unless you change the programming... If you do that, the benefit you will get will be solely from the tune, and there are good tunes from companies like Green Diesel Engineering which will still use the DEF and emissions system, and provide better benefit than removing the system. You're better off just doing that than you are removing the DEF system.

I should think that the potential legal ramifications would be far in excess to any perceived gains you may experience by tampering with it.
It's clearly one of those situations where the risks are far higher than the rewards.

Thanks everyone for your replies. Not trolling. Just ignorant of the law, but have no intention of acting on any of this. An employee of the dealer I bought mine from recommended it, but I was suspicious of his suggestion. Looks like my suspicion served me well.

Good that you asked. The EPA is getting nastier and nastier to those that want to modify diesel systems on vehicles. One reason I believe the 7.3 L PowerStrokes are so amazing. A great engine, lots of power, can be built to make more power, no emissions.

There is no way I would modify a new diesel truck/suv/wrangler. If a vehicle has been deleted of that DEF stuff, most dealerships will not take that vehicle on trade. Also one reason that I prefer the to keep my 7.3's PowerStrokes.

Just be thankful that you don't have a tier 3 diesel like a Kubota tractor. Every so often you have to crank up the rpms to burn off the particulars that collect in the clean exhaust system. DEF is just an additive to bypass this burn off process. All of this is to help keep our air cleaner. Not a bad thing....after all its our only Earth. I would not try and bypass the system.

I wish I could force a regen at will. There are many times that I see the regen message pop up (I'm GDE tuned so it tells me), and I know I won't be driving at 40+ mph consistently for a long time. City traffic sucks. I'd be happy to leave my Jeep parked and rip up the RPMs to burn it off... Just have to make sure my windows are closed in my house to avoid the smell ?

Actually, DEF has nothing to do with the burn off of particulate matter. DEF is injected into the system right before the SCR to reduce NOX. The DPF is for catching and burning the particulate stuff.

I have heard that some of those off-road diesels are using some different tricks to negate the need for the DEF/SCR setup. Hopefully something like that will go into road diesels. The DEF setup is just adding too much complexity to the diesels.

DEF isn't for that. It's used to neutralize the nitrogen oxides you get when running lean and hot down the road, which you have to do to reduce particulates before they get to the DPF.
