Funny you mention John Deere. I'm waiting on a new programmer right now that is usually used for modifying the ECU on them. I'm using it for other purposes (Vespa) but one of its primary selling points was that they were able to hack in to various tractor ECUs.
I wonder how much overlap there is between the 'Vespa Owners' and 'Deere Tractor Owners' Venn Diagram.

My grandfather was a beef cattle farmer with at least a half-dozen tractors, but he also owned a Miata and a Peugeot sedan. I am 100% positive no one else on the planet could claim that garage.

That stupid scooter is always surprising me. It has things in common with some Ducatis too. Right now, it's probably over 110 HP/liter. Too bad its only 0.25 liters.

Wow...I was way off. No idea 19 states didn't have it. In my state...they don't do a tailpipe sniff on OBDII vehicles...they plug in and read codes.

It's a lot like building a buggy too...I went the AutoMeter route, but Dakota Digital makes bad ass displays now....spendy though.

Thanks for the correction and sorry for spreading info without checking it out.

:like:
No worries on that at all.
Good point about it being like building a buggy.

This is a great idea if you want a reliable bug out vehicle. When the sh!t hits the fan, I have a feeling modern vehicles such as the JL will be "turned off" remotely. The capability to do this has already been proven. Slightly less technologically advanced vehicles will be EMP'd. The only thing functioning will be seriously older vehicles with standard distributer and coil ignitions. Our beautiful JLs will be worthless in a post-apocalyptic world unfortunately...

---all except @PyrPatriot 's that is...
I do have a vehicle that is technologically "inferior". It off-roads well enough.

No idea why you would want to do that...the electronics are what sets the JL apart.
I like the look of the JL and JT better than any other Jeep except maybe the ones from the 50s

To be fair, in 30 years all those old parts will be printed up in space age durable materials costing pennies.

Sean, I also thought you couldn't register a vehicle with an engine older than the body. But we're both in Arizona, so that explains that.
Man, when did freedom die?

This is so dumb, I can understand nostalgia, but this is like install a Windows 95 on a new super ultrabook laptop, because you want a "proved" system...

Wouldn't it be cheaper to buy/build a custom frame and buy the body panels you intend to use (preferably at a junkyard), versus buying an entire jeep only to scrap 80% of it?

The electronics one of the things that make the JL a stand out Jeep.

The new 8speed auto is so smooth and drivable and it is due to the computer controls.

I had a ‘81 CJ-5 I fully restored on ‘97. It was fun. I offer two points to anyone considering what the OP is proposing:

- A lot of aftermarket companies sold their dies and machinery overseas when the recession hit in ‘08. This resulted in a lot of inferior parts on the market. For example, I went through three fuel pump for my Comanche in less than two months.

- Modern electronics are just another aspect of vehicles than can be modified to personalize your ride. They aren’t something to be shunned. Learn to work with them. They can make your ride faster, more reliable, and more capable.

I think it would be more like the equivalent of a Chromebook.

Normally, I'd lurk and read and laugh, but there are some truly stand out batshit crazy posts on this thread. Thanks for the laughs, I think?

This is something I'm considering several years down the road when my warranty is long gone and I (potentially) have a new daily driver. I've done a little bit of programming and I'm truly curious how far you can go with the computers in vehicles like the JLU.

Also: I'm the exact opposite of OP: I'd love to get my hands on an old Wagoneer or Power Wagon (Macho), swap in a more modern drive train, suspension (based on a modern variant or something that is similarly sized), update some stuff (more comfortable seats, working gauges, sound system with the ability to connect to my phone so i can play music, etc) and outfit it with armor and a winch and take it out on easy trails/ car shows/ road trips. A Restomod with a focus on clean design and subtle updates.

I love some of the retro styles, but I'm reading first hand accounts of some people who have had those vehicles brand new and by all accounts, they were real crappy.

It is an outlandish concept, I know. I just value control over certain aspects of my life, when possible. I don't want any company like FCA or Deere telling me I can't work on my own car and effectively stop me from doing it by having computer privileges necessary for working on the mechanical/electrical aspects of a vehicle. Technology is and always has been a double edged sword.

This is the sort of thing I want to avoid

Car companies will do anything to stop you from fixing your own car

https://www.autoblog.com/2015/04/20/automakers-gearheads-car-repairs/

So even if you are good with computers, you may still not be legally allowed to work on your own car, some day.
