New to the diesel world I see a lot of talk about additives some for and some against. What are your thoughts and if you recommend using it which ones and how often?

I am very much for additives as I believe our ULSD is junk compared to diesel “of old”. I preface my opinion based on the fact that my experience is with HD diesel trucks (think Ford/Chevy/Dodge, not Peterbuilt etc). In other words, I don’t know the Jeep Diesel system to include strengths and weaknesses. As an example, a weak point of the HD diesels is the Bosch high pressure fuel pump. It doesn’t take much moisture in the fuel to cause the pump to start to rust, which then weakens it and it tends to unexpectedly grenade, sending shrapnel through the fuel system and causing an astronomical repair bill. Some manufacturers have addresses this better than others (it is still a concern for my Ford).

This link is a great read and very informative.

I use the Opti-Lube summer blend as a little goes a long ways, it is economical, and I don’t live in a cold climate that may need to worry about the fuel gelling.

Is there any comparison test that is more recent besides the one that Youtuber Project Farm did three years ago? I am using Hotshots EDT in both of ours, and I change the fuel filter every oil change instead of every other that the manual recommends. I know that Cummins recommends PowerService but measuring it out for our tiny tanks is not as easy as the Hotshots bottle.

Can you also use additives like HotShot EDT with biodiesel or just #2? Some of the stations by me will say ‘Biodiesel’ on the price sign and ‘Diesel #2’ on pump so not sure which it is. I’d like to just add every time so my pump doesn’t fail again on me but not sure if additives are compatible with B20 fuel.

I did a lot of research on my Duramax years ago and started using Power Service additive (silver bottle) (white bottle is same but for winter/anti gel) so I just decided to run it in the Jeep also.
As Terpsmandan said it's hard to measure so I just saved a bunch of those Heet bottles for gas antifreeze and put 10-12oz in each one.
Make sure the cap is on tight if you store it in your Jeep cuz it has a strong oder if it leaks out!

I started to use Stanadyne. I had a lot left over from my Duramax diesel. Boosts cetane, lubes and helps with moisture.

Always viewed the additives as snake oil but given the number of people posting about the CP4 imploding on them I have started using one until at least after I get the pump recall done...that is a big assumption on my part that the recall will actually fix the problem...

~3oz of Howes 103020 Diesel Defender @ each fill up.

Stopped at AutoZone and bought Hot Shots EDT on my way home from the dealership. 16 ounces for $20. 1 ounce a tank, so adding $1.25 a fill up.

Little cetane. Little lubricity. Teeny tiny piece of mind.

I use Power service white bottle in winter when temps are down into the “gel” range. Decades ago I bought a new turbodiesel pickup in Georgia. Got called home to Illinois two months later in December. It was cold (7F) when I got there. Next morning truck started up and drove about a mile before it died. Started back up, made it about 100 yards. This was on a Saturday, Christmas Eve?. Had my new truck towed to the local truck stop. They called me two hours later (after it sat in a heated bay. Guy had put in PS white bottle and let it thaw. Told me “if you will run this in Winter it will never gelup”. Been using it in multiple diesel vehicles (including tractors) ever since. Need in areas down to -20F and never had another fuel issue.

I've ordered a case of Amsoil Cetane Boost + Injector cleaner that I plan on running. Really like that their 8 oz. bottle treats 20 gallons.

Also doing more research in Biodiesel.

They say it does. From their website. I ordered it direct. Could not find it locally.

"Diesel fuel lubricity additive is 100% compatible with other Hot Shot’s Secret fuel additives, including DIESEL EXTREME, EVERYDAY DIESEL TREATMENT and GASOLINE EXTREME. Follow recommended treat rates."
