FWIW, manufacturer calls for 0w20 in both my 2018 JLUR (3.6L w/72k miles) and 2016 GMC Sierra (6.2L w/182k miles) and neither of them consume oil between changes. Sierra is direct injection.

Also, I use AMSoil products...

My JL only seems to consume oil during summers when I pull my off road trailer up to the mountains. I run pretty high rpms on some of those hills and engine temps get up a bit more than normal. This happened with my 2018 JK too. The Silverado is another story. We have 2 in the fleet and they both drink oil. I honestly don't recall which engine they have, it is a v8, but the fleet guys seemed to have heard it's a known issue on them. They told me the thinner oil slips past seals it whatever. I'm not a certified amsoil mechanic, so I dont know exactly what they were telling me. I just know my old TJ runs hotter and harder with 10w40 and doesnt lose oil...except for the 2 times when the rear main seal leaked, the valve cover gasket leaked, and the head gasket leaked Lol. I did put synthetic in the TJ once and it managed to leak all over the place (not severe, just weeping) out seals that weren't leaking before! Went back to conventional and didn't have the problem. Yes, I realize the 4.0 is a different beast than modern engines.

I'm out of warranty and have switched to Mobil 1. The Jeep seems to run better with it. 5w30 or 10w30, I forget. Hot climate here.

Great, thanks for the feedback. Definitely leaning towards 5w30 in summers here for sure.

I don't tow with my JL so it would be interesting to hear if others that tow with it consume oil. Depending on what generation Silverado you're driving, GM went from port injection engines to direct injection in 2014. For the first few years of the Gen V DI engine they were working out a few kinks. As others have pointed out, issues typically come from manufacturing and/or engineering defects. Look at me, I drive both port and direct injection engines and neither consumes oil. Guess I got lucky.

I also had a 4.0 TJ and man you're bringing back some memories. That engine and frame around the engine had zero rust on it from the nice coating of oil the seals all graciously leaked. Ha. That said, that straight six refused to die even after 20 years of driving before I sold it.

My understanding is the biggest issue is to pick an oil that meets FCA Material Standard MS-6395 for the V6. There are many weights and brands that meet that criteria.

From the owners manual for the 3.6: We recommend you use API Certified SAE 0W-20 Engine Oil,
meeting the requirements of FCA Material Standard MS-6395

For the 2.0: We recommend you use API Certified SAE 5W-30 Fully Synthetic Engine Oil, meeting the requirements of FCA Material Standard MS-13340

Notice in the owners manual it says RECOMMENDS but does not say REQUIRES. I am fairly certain 0W20 was picked because it offers slightly better fuel economy and is a 6395 oil. Also notice that it does not state fully synthetic for the V6 application, only for the 2.0 application.

The GDMFing FAD was added for fuel economy standards as well.

MS-6395 oils: https://oilsadvisor.com/chrysler-ms-6395-certified-motor-oils-list/

MS-13340 oils: can't find list yet

Here’s a magic trick: want to turn your 0w20 into 5w20? Let your engine run for about 60 seconds on a cold start. The viscosity modifier starts to coil almost immediately when the pressure from the pump (it’s a temperature/pressure thing). Don’t just start and drive…nurse your $50,000+ for just a minute.
Or don’t.

I run 6 quarts of 5w-40 in Pain Train.

I wouldn’t worry about 0w-20 being an issue. Just keep up with the intervals and you’ll be just fine.

I’m not sure where the thinner oil fear has come from. MFG’s have been using 0w for well over 10 years now. There is nothing wrong with 0 winter weight oil.
How are you running 6 qts. in the new 3.6L V6?

I’m going to Wally World today and may grab that. Always ran 5W40 in my similar Mazdaspeed direct injection 4 banger turbo.

And stay away from Mobil 1 filters from personal experience…

Yeah I got one of those filters from the "small batch" that Mobil put out. I explained to Walmart that you may want to pull them off the shelf and the look I got was basically "F off".
The problem is gone now and I'm back to using them, a simple test is if you can fit your thumb in the hole it's the right size... lol.

Soo... it's this magical thing I do.

I put 5 quarts in and then... wait for it... I add one more. Lol

BAM! - 6 quarts.

See the TSB attached from RIPP.

LOL smartass! I wondered if it had to do with the super charger.

Yeah.

People get all bent out of shape on the 5 quart, 6 quart thing. It’s not going to hurt a thing to add a quart extra. Now if you went two or three, then maybe you’ll have an issue. The 6 quart 3.6 could take 7 quarts without issue. If people were this literal with all the specs, then we wouldn’t have all of these wonderful oil viscosity or octane for the 2.0t threads. Lol.

I use MOPAR for my 392 and will do the same for my turbos. Picked up some yesterday and went vanilla with PP 5W30. Never experienced this kind of mistake.
