Thank you for letting me in. This is my lil guy. I want to keep it for as long as I can and quality oil is important for long life. Pentastar started with 5w30. So what happened in 2017 that they switched to 0w20? Is the Pentastar Upgrade really a significant redesign that allows 0w20? I was thinking about running HPL Super Car 0w30 as I offroad a lot. But will 0w30 hurt my engine? Thanks!

I’ve been using 5w30 Pennzoil Platinum since 2k miles. 27k miles now, no issues. Changed every 7k miles, or once a year, whatever comes first. Filters have been Fram synthetic or Mobil1, whatever is in stock.

Zero oil use between changes. I add the entire 5 qt jug, and nothing more when I change it. Valve train is still noisy on a cold start up, but that’s a characteristic of the Pentastar.

Aren't 0w30 and 5w30 exactly the same except 0w30 flows better when cold?

Pretty much. Truly cold weather is of little concern where I live.

Welcome to the Forum!
0W30 will be just fine, plus it will be better for the timing chain tensioner pads. This is per the engineer that helped to design the 3.6 engine. I run 5W30 in ours.
Thank you! I will run 0w30 and then do a UOA and see how things look.

I wonder how dealer would know I ran non MS-6395 and 0w30 oil? I could order some Pennzoil 0w20 from Walmart, save the receipt and then return the oil lol. Ms-6395 is a weak spec I am told, any oil can meet it.

we use the best technology to repair your heart valve. We just don't spend the money to register it with the American Medical Association.

Doesn't that sound a little odd?

Good call on switching the Oil.

Some light reading on this oil topic.

Meh. Not really. API is not the FDA. API is just an industry org that exists primarily to lobby/steer regulatory agencies. They attract membership primarily for their ability to "have a seat at the table" with government regulatory actions. They develop standards as a way to legitimize their existence, much like SAE. I'm not trying to minimize or detract from API or SAE, because they, and many other similar technical associations, do provide significant benefits, not only to each other, but to the public and government. But a business doesn't have to join and pay fees to API to use their standards as the basis for their products. However, they do have to pay fees to use the API trademarks. The trademarks provide consumer product recognition and confidence. So, these smaller boutique motor oil companies weigh their ability to market without the API (and Dexos, etc.) trademarks against the potential market gained from using API trademarks and the associated fees.
