Poke is lame. It's based on taste, and people that like poke have poor taste. Keeping your vehicle away from damage only works if the obstacle is smooth, which trails rarely are. It also doesn't address all of the damage mud and rocks thrown from tires cause. There is no logical reason for poke, nor is there any valid aesthetic reason.

Most of the major lifts require 4.5-4.75" of backspacing to clear and the bulk of the wheels available do target that fitment. If you wanna run a 12"+ wide tire on one of those wheels it's going to exceed the available width of the fenders??‍♂. There are definitely wheels out there that have even more offset just for the sake of the bro-dozer look but a lot of times some poke is unavoidable.

I thought this thread was about poke bowls and was a bit confused until I opened it. I must have food on the brain for some reason...
Same here, I could go for a poke bowl and a cold beer right about now.

It started with a simple
"Just curious" - by the OP..
So lets keep the OP out of the infighting please.... now, lets get those gloves off and really "duke it out" over this whole poke thing... blood, guts, and teeth should be spilling all over the floor over this essential issue of "poke or no-poke" and lets not hold back as this ones almost as big as "angry grill or headlight eyelashes" and needs to be resolved by us for sure.
I'll start drinking right now as clearly I need to catch up before my opinion is clear !
You guys are a riot on this forum - love you all -so much fun over nothing ! ? :) ? :jk:
Now... back to our regular programing

I can only speak for myself on this topic. My JLUR is lifted 6" and on 40x13.5's with 17x9 wheels with 4.53" backspace and -12mm offset. Its got about 3.25" of poke up front and about 2.5" out back.

The main benefit of the poke is to properly clear the frame and lower control arms, without sacrificing turning radius. The secondary benefits are offsetting the higher center of gravity by widening the track, and guarding the body and fenders from damage.

Yes. The poke does throw more dirt and whatnot onto the sides of the body, more so due to the chopped factory fenders. Do I care? Not in the least. My Jeep has only seen soap twice in over 4 years, and both of those occasions were within the first couple of months.

Maximizing ground clearance and approach/breakover/departure angles for rock crawling are my main concerns, all while serving daily driver duty with better overall ride and handling quality than in stock form.

Just curious.
Don’t remember the term when I was on a Jeep TJ forum years ago, but I’ve seen it a lot here since getting the JLR last year.

From my point of view, the tire sticking out from under the flares was something you had to live with if you got wider tires, especially with less backspaced wheels, and maybe because you needed to move the tires out to clear suspension with the wider tires—those kinds of lift&tire modification issues.

But it seems like poke is something people want to achieve for its own sake?

Tire sticking out from under the flare also can cause legal problems some places—they seem easy about that in Utah where I am. But I prefer stock backspacing (for the sake of the hubs) if I can make it work with tire width, lift, clearance at full articulation, and turn radius. And I like that less mud gets thrown around.
According to the title I thought this was going to be about food. I was instantly confused and excited.
Man I'm still such a fat kid. lol

In regards to tire poke I have no idea. But, poke the food is good. Very colorful, very fresh. Always delicious.

On my way home today I saw a bronco with what must have been 6" wheel spacers like the bro dozer crowd uses.

RIP tie rods.

As orange is the new black, poke is the new angry grill.

Poke is for people who don't understand...well, just don't understand basic understanding.

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, and neither was wide enough for a Jeep with poke, and I was happy.

I think 285 or 11.5” width is the JL threshold before tire poke is present.
