Value depends entirely on the buyer. Upgrades are worth more to a "Jeep" person looking for something that's already got the mods they want. They're not worth much to a soccer mom looking for something to drop the kids off at practice a few days a week.

If looking to buy used, what would you go for? A vehicle that had god-knows-what done to it and was likely used in the same way, or a complete stock rig that only ever offroaded the mall parking lot?

Want the mods to be actually worth anything, take them off. In my opinion at least.

I have never bought a modded used vehicle. Every one I’ve looked at had parts on it that I would have never used or that I’m not willing to pay a premium for. Be those parts cheap or so high end that they just aren’t worth it. Or the vehicle was chopped up too much for the mods, and they can’t be undone. It’s even very rare that the aftermarket wheels and tires on another Jeep are one that I would have chosen or even like. Lots of people are the same way.

An alternative to achieving a lower appraisal:
  1. Add an angry grille.
  2. Claim that all your mods are Rough Country, DV8, and/or EAG.
  3. Post on a FB Jeep group asking how much it’s worth.
  4. Average how much the keyboard ‘experts’ value it at private sale.
I’d also be happy to write a bill of sale for $100… we’ll bury in the fine print that the return window for my money back is exactly the day after your divorce is finalized :) .

Lots of factors at play here...

Your $1G bumper won't be worth anywhere close to that if it now shows rust spots dings and scratches. if its still like new.... maybe half what you paid. same goes for any other upgrade.

Upgrades to you, might not be upgrades to others.... like your choice of wheels, height and make of lift, windshield light bars , angry frigging fugly grills might be questionable to lots of potential buyers. They will be more interested in the overall condition of the jeep, like how clean it is and how high/low mileage is.

You might be lucky and find that one or 2 guys that really like everything you've done to it and willing to pay a premium for the Jeep.... who knows, maybe even a bidding war :)

Blood sucking dealers however won’t give you zilch for anything, but will certainly use it all to promote the Jeep and ask for way more than its worth.

Most of those new car dealers will sell to a specialty used dealer or will auction it. They really don't want the hassle of having to make sure all of those mods are done correctly and function properly. They also don't want to deal with many the young people that are attacted to the modded vehilces that don't have the money or credit to buy. Plus, those are the buyers that complain about something not working or breaking long after the purchase.

The times they are a changin' at the ol' Moosie house.

Getting a divorce, and I am trying to understand the value of upgrades.

I content that if I sold the Jeep today, the value would be zero. My soon to be ex believes the value is what I paid for the parts.

Answer is probably somewhere in the middle. What do y'all think?
First... sorry you are going through this, been there done that and it sucks.
Second... your ex is smoking crack. While there is some value it is no where near what you paid and never will be, just the cold hard facts.
Third... I am in the market for a JL (our fourth one) so please PM the specs and price.

Going through a divorce sucks, sorry you are having to go through this... your best option might be to get a written detailed trade-in offer from a local Jeep dealer. That might stand up in court better than guessing.

Unfortunately upgrades are worth diddly squat……. Especially to car lots….if you sell to individual you can show the upgrades as reason for the price you’re asking but even then, they have to be looking for your exact build for them to justify it to themselves……
Sorry about the split, that sucks……,

You need to get appraisals from reputable car dealers or car companies on what they would offer for it. CarMax, dealerships, etc.... Get at least 3 appraisals and use those as the official documents to value the Jeep. No reason to list out all of the mods or expected value of each. All that matters is what a reputable car dealer would offer you for the vehicle in it's current state. Nothing else matters. No offense to anyone but any of the replies on this post are absolute meaningless under the situation. You can print out all of the replies on here from random people and the opposing attorney is just going to laugh and throw that paper in the trashcan.

SOMETIMES Jeep dealerships have a “customs” section. I know Criswell in Maryland does. So depending on the mods and if they are actually good selling points, it can work in your favor if you do end up selling it.

Appraisal wise for a divorce, I’m guessing it’ll be whatever the kbb value is.
