What are Upgrades worth?

Getting a divorce, and I am trying to understand the value of upgrades.

I content that if I sold the Jeep today, the value would be zero. My soon to be ex believes the value is what I paid for the parts.

Answer is probably somewhere in the middle. What do y'all think?

Sorry to hear you're going thru this. Best of luck dealing with the ex and hopefully you guys can work out most of the details on your own.

Carmax only considers the value of a stock vehicle. Tried them when I sold the JK, they don't take into account any of the aftermarket upgrades you slap on.

Not sure about the other two though.

Depends on how or to who you sell it to. Also depends on the upgrades as most have little to no value. Some mods also diminish the value of the jeep as the target group is reduced the more specialized the setup. Tires, lifts, and winches probably help depending on the quality if above the stock setup. Not as much as you paid. Tint, mats, coatings, etc., have zero value moving forward.

As noted above, take it to a dealership and then go to Carmax, do a KBB, Carvana, etc. and you'll have a bracket from trade-in to private resale.

Depends on the lot, I had them look at my jeep and they did tack on for some of my upgrades. They actually gave me a pretty good offer.

Rule of thumb really is aftermarket parts do not add value to a vehicle. A dealer won't give you more for it, and an individual shouldn't be expected to either.

In my opinion, other people's mods to a vehicle detract from the value. I will pay more for a good condition vehicle that is stock, over the unknown of a modified vehicle. Unless it's some over the top professionally built vehicle of course, but those are things like racecars and such, and have their own value evaluation.

Personally I pay zero for aftermarket parts when I buy. In this case 50%.
Go to eBay and see what each piece is worth. That's an open market and would be fair.

All the above comments are true. Depending on how heavily modded some vehicles are, a dealer won’t take for trade or will only offer wholesale/auction price.

Sorry about what you’re going through. Been through it twice. There are probably many on the site who would be going through the same thing if their wife knew how much was spent on some of the mods, or redo of mods, that they have done.

Why does the Jeep have to be sold? I never sold a vehicle in a divorce. She kept hers, I kept mine.

Get several quotes and that is the car's value. Takes opinion out of it. Sorry you're going through this - don't get hung up on the petty $hit so you can get this behind you as quickly as possible.
