Hey everyone so today I got a in car accident and just wanted to know what people think I would be super bummed if it is totaled but im just waiting on to hear back from the shop it’s at. It’s only on one side too. Other side is fine beside driver wheel bent in. Little edit: I just hit 98k that morning and only had it about a year and 3 months. Along with its a 2014 and I’m the second owner and still owe on it.

Did the aribag deploy? If it did, it's totaled.

No. This is false and not always the case. It has been discussed previously on this site and elsewhere.

Yep I've seen it go both ways. One of the more interesting things I've seen was a guy whose truck was going to be totaled if they counted the airbags but he decided not to have the airbags replaced and the insurance agreed not to total out his truck. Still not sure how he got them to do that but I rode in the truck after it all happened and the truck was perfect except the cover on his steering wheel was split open where the airbag had deployed and wasn't replaced. Otherwise there was no indication that the truck was ever in an accident.

I can vouch for this. My claim that I just went through wasn't going to be totaled with 3 of the 4 air bags going off and a frame replacement. It was only totaled once the estimator updated the estimate with additional damage to push it over the 75% of the value line.

My opinion, looks like roughly $8000 worth of repair. I would be surprised if it was totaled but it’s not out of the question.

Add another $5,000+ to that if they replace the axle. With the front suspension all fuckered up the way it looks then it bent or ripped the control arm mounts. It will be difficult to get back into the right spot and will be forever off. A good shop will just write up a new reman axle.

It's a bit hard to see the extent of damage from the picture, but I would lean towards it being a total loss.

Is it at a local shop where you can talk to the person responsible for making that decision?

When ours (2020 JLUR) was hit the guy who would be "fixing" it walked us through what would need to be done, including replacing the frame (!?!?). After discussions he wanted to know which way he should lean on his analysis. Yeah, it was declared totaled like we wanted.

This was during the insane COVID used car pricing, so we got ~$8K more than we paid for it a year and a half / 18k miles earlier.

to total it out or not is based on the cost to repair it vs its insured value (basically market value). they have a threshold for this. 60-75% from what ive heard. im sure it varies by company and possibly by state. with the age and mileage of the vehicle in question, what is its present market value? a ten year old JK with almost 100k on it. if its a sport, i cant see it being worth salvaging. even a rubi would be a tough call.

carvana is now valuing my 2018 Sport, with 30k on the odo, at $20k lol. so resale value is maybe $25 to $30k at best. my jeep is 6 years old with pretty low mileage and in great condition.

it doesnt look like too bad of damage, if no frame damage. if no frame damage and they want to total it out, you can always buy and it fixed yourself. you can easily find used parts and save huge. just need a decent body shop or mechanic to work with. although it will have a salvage title.

was the accident your fault? if not, then you should be good. even if you owe on it, unless youre crazy upside down. even then, get an attorney involved. he'll make sure youre taken care of.

if its totaled and the insurance company tries to low ball you, just find examples of similar jeeps in your area and show them that you are not able to replace it with a similar jeep for the money that was paid out. youre supposed to be able to replace it with a like kind/quality jeep (ie sport with 100k miles) for what the settlement payout is. i had a truck totaled and the adjuster told me if i cant find another one for the amount they were paying me they can increase the amount. i would just need to provide them with samples (same trucks for sale).

need to see what your body shop says. theyll know right off the bat what the insurance is going to say (usually). tell the body shop which way you'd like it to go. they do have some say with the insurance guy. they work together. ie "the customer has sentimental attachment to the vehicle and would really like to fix it and keep it if possible" or "the customer feels it cant be properly repaired and is really hoping it is totaled out. some times it can be close and go either way.

please be sure to update us when you find out.

Its a $15k Jeep at best. If the axle is still good you should be ok. But the steering is likely trashed and control arms. Maybe control arm brackets, driveshaft etc. Id say its hit and miss. I wouldn't bet either way.

But maybe with labor rates as they are, plus all the replacement parts, then the requirement to get it perfect etc.. If it was me Id total it and sell the carcass off for salvage value. Pay you out $15k or whatever its assessed as. Save the $7k repair bill and pocket the salvage value.

This thread is getting to be a bit ridiculous. It’s amazing to me that people are providing damage estimates and vehicle values, by looking at pictures on a forum. Other than the OP’s insurance company and the repair shop authorized by the insurance company to check the vehicle damage, no one else can readily provide those numbers. This thread has run its course and any monetary figures provided are useless.

If it is totaled, be sure to strip all the aftermarket gear off if you can.

I was definitely going to do that. I took everything out today now just waiting for them to respond if it’s totaled or not.
