Tape on tailgate?

I took it in for water intrusion around the corners of the tailgate in high pressure car washes (hard top). They also tested another new one on the lot and apparently when you blast water at that angle, they all do it. Fair enough… it’s a convertible and rain, so far, hasn’t been an issue.

Today I noticed a lot of squeaking from the rear, especially on uneven surfaces. Upon inspection, I noticed some tape that’s wearing down. Is this from the factory or did my dealer add it during the attempted fix? Looks like I should just peel it off

And along those lines, is tracking down squeaks and rattles a losing battle on a Jeep that’s off roaded a fair bit? Just the nature of a modular car with lots of hard plastics?

100% came from the factory that way, it’s to help with pressure/sealing where the opening and window down seals comet together. You will notice wearing but that most likely is not your squeak points.

My 2019 model does not have that tape. Most likely your dealer.

Since it’s wearing away on its own after a month, I removed it. I will replace with foam stripping recommended in another thread.

My 2020 does not have that tape. If it is factory it must have been a change on later models at some point.

Mine was squeaking from the tail gate latch. I replaced the foam with anti-squeak tape and it has been silent for months.

I believe that every unit is water tested at the factory before the final inspection. If the gate leaks, they slap on that sealing tape? It isn’t pretty, but probably effective enough.

For the squeak, clean the seal on the bottom of the rear window, then use some 303 protectant on it, not Armor All, or WD40. Then use a ceramic based wax on the top edge of the tailgate. The noise will stop. You will prob need to do this every 4-6 weeks. The rubber seal squeaks against the paint when it begins to dry out.

Get yourself some UHMW tape and tape it over the top edge of the tailgate. I’ve had this on for 2 years now and it’s as silent as I think my farts.

Thanks! What should I check? Does that area need to be lubed as well? Keep the tape on?

Lots of good advice here… I will try until I find success. Dealer tried but only showed me how to adjust the gate strike plate to make it latch tighter.

Thank you! Someone else recommended this tape which costs less. If it doesn’t work, I’ll definitely try the 3M stuff.
