Wax the top edge of the tailgate with a good silicone or ceramic wax, then wipe the rubber seal on the bottom of the rear window with some 303. That ought to take care of it.

Just got my 2023 JLU and within the past week and a half I’ve been hearing a rattling noise in the back cargo area. It seems like every day it’s getting worse and I’ve been trying to pin point what the cause is. I can hear this rattling noise whenever I go over bumps or uneven road. I was wondering if anyone knows what could be causing this.

This is what I’ve tried already after extensively searching the forum:

• Taken out all items in the cargo area including the plastic piece that holds the bolts for the doors/hardtop, as well as the Jack that is underneath it.
• Adjusting the latch on the inside of the jeep that holds the tailgate closed as well as placing electrical tape on both latches.
• Placing 3M Tape on the part of the tailgate where the rear window meets it.
• Sitting in the rear while someone else drives the Jeep. I couldn’t pinpoint where the noise was coming from only that it was coming from the cargo area and potentially from the right side.
• Keeping the rear passenger cup holder down while driving.

Mine started rattling when I put the soft top back on. I had taken the soft top completely off. I haven't investigated mine yet, but I am going to have somebody sit in the back while I drive around so somebody can pinpoint the noise in the back...

So…. Rubber seal lubing check, spare tire tight, storage cubby checked. Was gonna suggest some of the above, but at this point……

check hardtop bolts for tightness.

Might be the wheelwell plastic molding that makes contact where it meets under the tub railing. I have the big speaker on the right and had to put a rubber shim to stop rattling. Never heard it since.

Also, remove the spare and check the mopar carrier reinforcement bracket for tightness and all else carrier related while you’re there. Maybe even try a ride without the spare and see.

My brother is having same issues and is waiting for me to come-by and check it …. Might go this coming week-end.

I’ll have to try 303, I used WD40 silicone lubricant spray and wiped it on the rubber seal.

I’m going to try and see if removing the spare does anything. It’s getting late now so I’ll get back to you tomorrow when I try that.

I had the same problem. Drove me nuts. Made my wife drive while I sat in the back. I discovered that it was the rear glass bottom seal. I tried WD40, dielectric grease, Dawn, all worked for a couple days then the sound came back. I cleaned all the seals in the rear really well, then put 303 on them. Then I waxed the top of the tailgate with some NuFinish. The sound went away and stayed away for a good long time. Every few weeks, I treat the seals with 303 and wipe the top of the tailgate with a ceramic detail spray.

I found that the cause of the noise was due to the rubber sticking to the tailgate top edge. Particularly in the area on the side with the hinge, as it engages the rubber first. Just a little motion on a less then smooth road will cuase the rubber to squeak against the painted metal. Reducing friction there is the only thing that works.

In my opinion it’s a design flaw. I don’t believe the rubber piece on the bottom of the glass is replaceable. It should be changed to a different grade of synthetic rubber or to silicone.

The rear glass has a rubber seal that makes contact with the swing gate, lube the seal and report back

Can confirm that it's the rubber seal, sat in the cargo area while applying pressure to the seal, noise stopped.

I applied this a few days ago, have noticed a huge improvement.

You can check the rear seal by closing the tailgate on a T-shirt or thin moving blanket... anything that's cloth.

I replaced all my rear door foam with some 1mm thick, 3/4" wide felt (actually continued around the entire perimeter of the door). The stock foam was pretty much useless, and this eliminated the squeaking.

Was driving around my house with rear glass open today. Confirming - that is it the cause. Thank You all!

I think the only rattle I have in mine in the rear is the vents. I hope I dont have anything else eventually. It would drive me nuts. I have a popping right above and behind my head now that Im trying to track down lol.

I have a similar rattle on my 2022. It started after a drive through the washboard road in Joshua Tree NP. With the wife driving on our dirt road I narrowed it down to the rear DS over the rear wheel area. Jeep dealer said it was bad shock. I said no but they replaced it anyways. Still same noise, not a squeak or metallic rattle. I checked everything. Even thought it may be a bad wheel bearing. Finally one day I towed my UTV for a few hours and the noise went away. Weird..I now think it’s in the coil spring, possibly the top saddle area. I can see a shim or something between the spring and saddle that might have shifted. Dealer has been no help, was supposed to contact Stellantis, that was weeks ago. Next I will drop the coil and see what’s what.

Might be your tailgate itself rattling. I adjusted the striker and catch that the tailgate latches to when closed and fixed rattling issues in the past. Try moving them slightly forward towards the front of the vehicle and see if that makes a difference.

Our 2023 has a similar noise from the driver's rear. I haven't looked into it and probably won't. It also has more noise from the freedom panels than our other Jeeps have had.
