Just got my 2023 JLU and within the past week and a half I’ve been hearing a rattling noise in the back cargo area. It seems like every day it’s getting worse and I’ve been trying to pin point what the cause is. I can hear this rattling noise whenever I go over bumps or uneven road. I was wondering if anyone knows what could be causing this.

This is what I’ve tried already after extensively searching the forum:
  • Taken out all items in the cargo area including the plastic piece that holds the bolts for the doors/hardtop, as well as the Jack that is underneath it.
  • Adjusting the latch on the inside of the jeep that holds the tailgate closed as well as placing electrical tape on both latches.
  • Placing 3M Tape on the part of the tailgate where the rear window meets it.
  • Sitting in the rear while someone else drives the Jeep. I couldn’t pinpoint where the noise was coming from only that it was coming from the cargo area and potentially from the right side.
  • Keeping the rear passenger cup holder down while driving.

The rear glass has a rubber seal that makes contact with the swing gate, lube the seal and report back :)
Just tried this right now and it didn’t work :(

I applied the lubricant all along the rubber seal outlining the rear window and on the inside.

Turn the radio up

Sorry got nothing else. We have an 18 and it is noise free. I would suggest to get someone to drive and sit back there and listen to see if you can pinpoint where it might be coming from. An automotive stethoscope might help as well

Welcome to the world of Jeeps, where this sound will be the first of many. I suggest turning the radio up.
I wish this would help but even with the radio up high I can still hear it

I removed the plastic door/hardtop bolt holder and the jack and I still hear the noise. I have nothing inside the Jeep basically.

I’ve also tightened the lug nuts on the spare tire and checked to make sure nothing is loose on the reinforced holder.

Is the spare a factory set up? bumpers making contact with spare tire? wiggle it!

Those bumpers do make contact with the spare but they don’t make noise when I wiggle them and the spare is very secure.

check roll bar
I checked the roll bar and in some parts the plastic does move when I touch it but it doesn’t seem like I can secure it. Maybe if I get some foam i could mitigate some of the movement.

I guess you have to go back to being driven around to pin point
Yea I think ultimately I’m going to have to bring it to the dealer and if they can’t figure it out then I’ll just have to learn to deal with it ?
