Hi everyone- I just bought a used 2020 unlimited and about a week into driving it around this rattling noise started coming from the rear gate when hitting bumps. This recording includes the sound, particularly noticeable about 1 min in. My wife filmed it from the trunk. Any thoughts on what this is and how to fix it? I see random noises seem fairly common. Thanks.

First thing I'd check is if the spare tire is not being pressed sufficiently against the two black bumpers (backside of tail gate). It is most common to get this when someone changes the size of the tire and/or wheel and the backside of the tire no longer is pressing against these bumpers.

If you still have the stock wheel and tire, the bumpers could be worn out and not providing enough pressure against the tire to keep it from rattling. If they are still stock, you could buy new ones.

If the wheel and/or tire is not stock and not contacting the bumpers, you need to get it addressed. You can either get an adjustable spare tire carrier so the tire/wheel can be pushed back against the bumpers. Or get longer bumpers. Energry Suspension makes longer bumpers in polyurethane which can be trimmed to fit. There are other home-brewed methods on the forum to add longer bumpers.

If the spare checks out, I'd look underneath and see if the exhaust pipe is hitting the sway bar links or if there is anything else moving underneath which could be the cause.

Did you check the storage compartment in the back? Maybe something was left in there by the previous owner.

You can try to adjust the tailgate latch or...

Wow thanks for all the ideas. I think it’s probably the latch issue. Seems to be coming from there plus, and I hadn’t noticed this when I bought it, but the previous owner had put some tape on the inside of the door presumably to stop the rattle as well. I am going to try to reposition the latch this weekend. I’ll let you know how it resolves. Thanks!

I made the adjustments today. I brought that black bumper thing a hair forward and applied some electrical tape to the door and the sound is gone! This is great, thanks everyone!
