Start/Stop opinion?

Curious what everyone’s opinion is on the start/stop function? This will be the first time I will own one and I’ve been wondering if they are bad on the starter and things like that. I really dislike that they have taking some options away from the Jeeps. You can no longer get a 6 cylinder in an automatic and can no longer order the Gorilla glass. I’m just curious what off roading will be like with a 4 cylinder and the start/stop function.

I hate it and now my jeep has been at the dealer, will be 3 x this month, for start stop system error message - locks my jeep in park.

So we don’t have a group/one individuals That have the intelligence to reprogram/write a update to get rid of stop/start and tpms adjustments lights etc. So is the only answer to take out motor, transmission, wiring harness and unwanted sensors and replace with a non nanny motor, transmission. Saw a guy on tv doing just that. Above my pay grade for sure. Not to mention the cost.

My Sahara is an 2018, that should say it all……. I could write a book… It helped when a flash update allowed the Jeep to start off the main batt instead of being stranded when the the ess is dead and can’t be boosted…. fun… then a tow to the dealer, 800$ and 2 weeks to think about why I bought it (would’ve done it myself but who the heck knew what or where it was)

Now the 1 year old ess batt is dead and should be covered by warranty but was told there’s about 20 on back order we’ll get back to you…. Crickets as usual

If you are relying on the dealer to replace your batteries, you are going to get Jeep dealer and FCA levels of “customer service.”

Dealers are good for some things. Replacing batteries and rotating tires are not two of them. They turn these relatively simple tasks into never-ending Federal cases.

My opinion, it never should exist. And if it must exist, the way Jeep implemented it with a hidden pain in the ass Aux battery is inexcusable!

I don't know anyone that "likes" Start/Stop technologies (SST).

I do know people who tolerate it more than others, and those that do tend to enjoy what little gas savings and positive green impact they achieve using it.

SST technologies can and should IMHO be turned off when off roading. If your buying an automatic I'd think that some of your off roading would involve you switching to manual gears, which itself disables SST, in addition to the non-latching factory button and aftermarket tech covered already here.

Supposedly vehicles that have SST are equipped with more heavy duty starters, whatever that means.

IMHO Stellantis implemented SST sub optimally. I agree with their use of a second battery in most JL models with SST to handle appliances when SST is engaged, as owners can draw lots of power with aftermarket appliances that might rob the main battery of cranking power.

But a better design I think would have involved two equally sized batteries (read the SST battery getting larger more than the main battery getting smaller) with each of the batteries alternating the role of main and SST battery as controlled by on board computers.

Lol no doubt. I haven’t since used the dealer for anything but recalls, unfortunately at the time I wasn’t educated on the ess batt and didn’t have the TSB to start off the main. I know better now.

My 2018 has been far from trouble free but I’m happy to hear your having a better experience ?

Me i like it. And for those not liking it just learn how to use your break pedal! If you don't want it to engage don't push the pedal completely.

Auto Stop/Start does not bother me in the slightest. I never turn it off.

My 19 JLUR 3.6 with the dual battery ESS... I think ESS turned the engine off one time at a light when I forgot to manually turn it off before my Tazer got here. I hate it.

Wife's 21 JLUR 3.6 with eTorque... I forget that ESS is on. Pretty much seamless.

Really is a night and day difference between the two implementations.

could not have said it better,,,My 18 I can’t stand it and turn it off every time I start it. Wife’s 21 eTorque we leave alone as it’s pretty seamless.

4 Cyl Auto is great off road. and the ESS is disabled in 4 Lo.

I have a '22 JL Willys with the 3.6L and 8spd auto. It has the etorque system (standard now with V6/auto). I thought I'd hate the SST, but with the etorque system, SST is on a completely different level, and I really appreciate what the system achieves. The SST events are virtually seamless (unlike start/stop vehicles I've driven in the past).
I stumbled across this video review of a Ram 1500 V8 etorque system (same application as the 3.6L), featuring a Ram engineer riding along explaining the benefits of etorque. Pretty interesting!
My wife's new X5 has the B58 3.0L inline six (awesome engine) with their version of this same 48V mild hybrid system, and it works the same.

Worth the watch! ?

Unfortunately, if you want an automatic equipped V6, that's what you get now...
I will say, so far it works flawlessly, and the system is covered for 80K miles, (not that I have a lot of confidence in Jeep dealership technicians, lol!)
Time will tell...

Unfortunately the days of simplicity in vehicles is long gone...
