Just make sure you always have your "key" for your wheel locks. You dont want to be on a trail wanting to remove a tire without it. Its just like hood locks. An inconvenience if immediate access is required like an engine fire. They will deter the "casual" thief, but if they are determined, they'll come back with the tools they need. My $.02

Couple of months ago, a forum member here had their spare stolen off their brand new rig (XR I believe). They then had trouble replacing the wheel / tire set due to lack of availability. That’s the only instance I can recall. Regarding wheel locks…yes, they can be defeated. But as said it’s simple insurance and will at a minimum deter lazy thieves and better yet slow down the more motivated ones.

*Edit: link to the occurrence I referenced above: https://www.jlwranglerforums.com/fo...t-not-available-to-order-replacement-?.81701/

"Never heard of spare being stolen" with "Thieves easily defeat locks"

So is it happening or not happening?

I prefer rewarding ingenuity over lazy thieving so Mopar wheel locks installed.

I just figure they’d probably kill themselves trying to get mine off. Weighs over 100lbs. They’d have to really want it. That said my wheels did come with a key for the lug nuts that are on them. Lost it for a month when I “put it away so I’d have if I needed it” ?‍♀ Finally found it now it lives in the Jeep.

I'm thinking the thief knows that the key may be in your Jeep too. ?

It’s the New World. Yes they’ll steal it. If you put locking lugs on they’ll steal the whole jeep and work on it at home where they have more time.

I have came out with my brand new car, sitting on the ground, tires/rims gone! Check out these lock lug nuts, every single one requires a lock! Thieves will move on to a easier mark! Small investment for peace of mind!

By the time a thief has time to do any locking lug nut removal on my Jeep, he's going to have a knot on his head and be seeing stars. I purposely park in busy areas when away from home or I'm very close by within sight.

It's impossible to be jacking up a vehicle and banging on some locking lugnuts in a busy area unnoticed. Park wisely.

nothing will stop a determined thief, but i’m happy to not be the easiest mark, or at least slow them down.

the only spares i know of that have been stolen were all UNlocked.

I have been into Jeeps since the 70's. Plus been on Forums, it seems like forever. I have never heard of a spare tire being stolen. Batteries, yes.

They are expensive but you are not getting them off without the key or a cutting torch.

At least they put it on blocks, I've seen them put straight down on the hubs.
Heh, they broke into my garage and used my OWN bricks when they stole the wheels off of my old KK back in the day.

I have had a spare tire stolen - parked overnight while backpacking - I have wheel locks if, at the least, there might be a Jeep that doesn't...:)
Yeah, the locking lugs, at best, would just encourage a thief to look for an easier target?
