I've never had a spare tire stolen and I have a single lock on it. As for locking lugs on the rest though, I won't do it. I had a dealer strip one and not tell me. When i went to change it on the trail it couldn't be done. We had to cut it off.

I've only read about a Jeep spare being stolen. An XR wheel actually. The one one that is not available to purchase
I agree with you guys. You can't do much about it even with a key lock. That is why I added 2 different key locks lol.
I know they will find a way to steal them if they really wanted them but at least hopefully it will slow them down

For one thing, there better be more than one thief, otherwise if someone takes my spare off by themselves will likely find themselves laying under it…….? ……. But yeah, even though it’s hackable, I still have lock lugs on, I just don’t want to be the one with the path of least resistance in the parking lot……..
I'm curious Mr. R (AKA Mr. J) how much does the spare weigh ?

I’m not sure, never weighed it, but the bead lock rim by itself is around 45-47 lbs so I’m guessing north of 100 lbs.

Before we bought our JL we rented a few times from the Dollar Rent A Car near our house. Nice area, well lit next to a busy 4-lane road. They had all the spares stolen from the 5 Rubicons in their inventory from a fenced, locked parking lot. Reminds me of the old saying that 'a locked door only keeps honest people out'.

Locking lugs will bite you more than they'll stop your wheels from getting stolen.
My buddy broke the wheel lock key on his 16 JKUR, and the local Jeep dealer wouldn't replace it. Something about needing the part number to order it. Of course, he got a flat in the middle of Jan and ended up having to pound a socket onto it and muscle that POS off.

I run spline drive lugs on all my wheels and spare. More common than the wheel lock, so most tire shops have a key if i lose it or forget to leave it to them, but still makes it not the path of least resistance should someone decide to try to lift them.

I'd say going with a larger tire would help more than locking lugs. My spare barely fits inside the Jeep with the rear seat propped up. I would imagine it would have to be a hit job, as taking 1 or all 5 would not be fun. Maybe if I was in a more rural area where someone could get a big truck and take their time. They all measure exactly 37" and on a warm day they're north of 100lbs each.

Spare tire thefts? They do that? I thought they took 'em all.

I'm probably in the minority here but I think locking lug nuts are worthless. Easily defeated by a cheap universal socket.

Edit: I have not, nor do I know anyone who has had a spare tire stolen.
Thieves are lazy. A simple deterrence will make them pass your spare and go for the one on the jeep parked next to you.

I always replace the stock chrome lug nuts with a complete set of Gorilla black splined lug nuts on our Jeep purchases. This provides a little more security with 23 keyed splined lug nuts. Though I admit this is just as much for looks as it is for security, as I do not like chrome lug nuts on black wheels.
I do the same thing for the same reasons, other types of "locking Lugs" can strip leaving you stuck when you least need to be

Same here. I run spline lugs on all my wheels. Got them as a free upgrade from the company I bought my wheels and tires from. Might not save them from being stolen, but definitely more of a PITA for the guy who wants to give it a shot. :like:

I've been on this board a little over a year and I can only recall one spare being stolen.
18 months here, and this is the first thread I've seen regarding the subject of spare tire thefts. I can't recall reading any recent posts on the matter, either. Thankfully, it's one of the few things that, statistically, we needn't worry too much about.
