Line-X is the way I went. They do have the Line X Ultra option which is lighter and thinner. I have the regular Line-X spray on mine. The discoloration seen on top of the steps is just water. Pic was taken after a wash.

Do they strip off the original coating first or do they simply apply Line-X over the current coating?

My linex guy told me that they actually prefer new coated parts vs bare steel because coated parts have good metal underneath (when new) whereas bare steel parts have oils and surface rust. So, to answer your question, if the part is brand new, they will put the LineX over the coating already on it, without the need to strip. If however, there is ANY rust on the part, they have to sandblast the part, which of course, adds cost.

They will prep the surface first by sanding or blasting. Not sure what they did...but they do not remove everything down to the metal.

Really wished they offered this instead of the powdercoating. No more headaches for them or the customers. For the life of me I don't understand why companies dont use linex instead of powdercoating for offroad parts.
Most customers focus on the price and not quality and durability. Even Roam is clear they have two different versions of the same product, with the e-coat being $200 more.

So while line-x will add about the same costs to a pair of rock rails and those of us who want to buy quality will factor that it comes line-x coated as worth a premium, many won’t and it will cost them sales overall.

Where it becomes a problem is when people choose crap and expect quality, it seems Roam is handling this well with the post they made over an upgrade path, kudos to them.

From a happy LOD customer, who will line-x his stuff.

Line x training is clear - blast to bare metal where possible before coating.

Not sure where you got this info, but it's not true. LineX started out as a bedliner company for truck beds. When they got a new truck, they would rough up the paint, clean it from oils, and spray it. They wouldn't sandblast the truckbed. Furthermore, sandblasting requires a different license in most states, so most LineX places DO NOT do their own blasting, which impedes their business, so almost always, when there is no rust in question, they will rough up, clean, and spray.

The point I made in a much earlier post, is on on certain parts with certain shapes, ANY AND ALL powdercoat, no matter how "special" will fail. Roam sliders have ALL the bad spots where powdercoating is a terrible option, which is why their customers will have rust issues. The tops of those circles, the corners, and those slits in the angled steel will rust on ALL their sliders, no matter what kind of powdercoat they use, because powdercoating is very weak on edging. I used to do a LOT of my own powdercoating in my own garage/oven, as well as parts for friends and forum members, and know what it can and can't do. Powdercoating is a terrible product for offroad parts.

The issue here is simple and you hit it on the head. Sandblasting they typically can’t do so they will avoid this if not a reputable line x franchise.

The good ones will be honest and tell you that if you are worried that powder coat is coming off because of poor adhesion it also means if they put line x over it you also will have the same issues. Our local line x franchise sent me to get my LOD’s blasted before they would line x them. If I didn’t they would not do it as could not warranty the overall performance.

So any franchise saying to line x over something that can be blasted I’d question. Obviously a truck bed is a bit different as not really possible to easily blast, but I do know guys who are serious and do so before getting bedliner installed,

That’s my problem, I can’t even get an email response. I understand delays from small shops, but zero communication for a product I have already paid for is unacceptable. If they have gotten that busy, then hire a high school student to come in after school and respond to emails, especially from paying customers. I will hold out for 1 more week, but if I don’t at least get a shipping update, then I will try to cancel, but don’t know if Anthony will respond to that either.
Yesterday, I ordered a set of the 4 door frame mounted.
Got a payment confirmation from PayPal and... not a sound from Roamoffroad.
They also did NOT reply to my email, sent a few days ago - maybe they don't like me:(:(:(.

Well... we'll see what happens :-(

I've had the Roam side steps on less than a year and they are rusting inside and out. Multiple emails to Anthony with pics, no response. I would not recommend these steps or Roam to anyone.

I have reached out to @ROAM 2 or 3 times as well with no reply back. Mine are also rusting like crazy. I would not recommend these either. That opinion could be changed if ROAM would actually provide good customer support. At this time, Im thinking about junking these for a new set. Such a disappointment !

Their website doesn't say anything about the e-coat. Product description on both products are pretty much copy and paste and I thought the difference between two versions was step vs rock slider. I don't rock crawl so I purchased the step version.

LOD Destroyer wasn't available when I was shopping for the steps. I should've waited .

Yes i also had the same issue! They told me to paint it with rustoleum! ugh. Not the response i was expecting after paying so much for these.
At least they responded to you. Mine are rusting at all seams as well. Design caught my eye and I purchased but I have never got a return call from customer service with any of my questions/concerns. I am done with Roam Offroad.

An Update...

Today I got an email from Anthony, replying to some questions I emailed Roamoffroad a few days ago - As I mentioned, I already ordered the frame-mounted steps.

About an hour after the mail arrived, I got a text message from Fedex, about a shipment from Texas - the only thing I ordered from Texas was the steps, so I hope it is it... I'll find out on 05/01.

Up until now, I did NOT get anything from Roamoffroad, regarding my order - just in-case, I was checking my spam...nothing.

After getting the text message, I replied to Anthony, describing my (and others, as it appears in the forum) concerns with the lack of communication with Roamoffroad.

As for the rust issue.
From reading about the product (in some forums), I understand that it was a problem with the first few months of production and it was solved... hopefully.
Nevertheless - it is no excuse for not replying to a customer(s!!!) "call", and this is disturbing for me :-(.

Bernard.

Rust in the rust belt seams to be an issue with all aftermarket steel bumpers, side steps etc. I owned ICI bumpers and a long time ago bulletproof bumpers both claim 5 step powder coating, etc. and if you get a small rock chip or scrap from wheeling and don’t seal it you will get rust. Not sure about the Roam stuff, but I did order and receive the frame mount rock sliders very quick and plan to touch up every scrap and chip as soon as I see them based on my past experience. Good luck to all.
