Do they strip off the original coating first or do they simply apply Line-X over the current coating?Line-X is the way I went. They do have the Line X Ultra option which is lighter and thinner. I have the regular Line-X spray on mine. The discoloration seen on top of the steps is just water. Pic was taken after a wash.
My linex guy told me that they actually prefer new coated parts vs bare steel because coated parts have good metal underneath (when new) whereas bare steel parts have oils and surface rust. So, to answer your question, if the part is brand new, they will put the LineX over the coating already on it, without the need to strip. If however, there is ANY rust on the part, they have to sandblast the part, which of course, adds cost.
They will prep the surface first by sanding or blasting. Not sure what they did...but they do not remove everything down to the metal.
Most customers focus on the price and not quality and durability. Even Roam is clear they have two different versions of the same product, with the e-coat being $200 more.
Line x training is clear - blast to bare metal where possible before coating.
Not sure where you got this info, but it's not true. LineX started out as a bedliner company for truck beds. When they got a new truck, they would rough up the paint, clean it from oils, and spray it. They wouldn't sandblast the truckbed. Furthermore, sandblasting requires a different license in most states, so most LineX places DO NOT do their own blasting, which impedes their business, so almost always, when there is no rust in question, they will rough up, clean, and spray.
The point I made in a much earlier post, is on on certain parts with certain shapes, ANY AND ALL powdercoat, no matter how "special" will fail. Roam sliders have ALL the bad spots where powdercoating is a terrible option, which is why their customers will have rust issues. The tops of those circles, the corners, and those slits in the angled steel will rust on ALL their sliders, no matter what kind of powdercoat they use, because powdercoating is very weak on edging. I used to do a LOT of my own powdercoating in my own garage/oven, as well as parts for friends and forum members, and know what it can and can't do. Powdercoating is a terrible product for offroad parts.
The issue here is simple and you hit it on the head. Sandblasting they typically can’t do so they will avoid this if not a reputable line x franchise.

Their website doesn't say anything about the e-coat. Product description on both products are pretty much copy and paste and I thought the difference between two versions was step vs rock slider. I don't rock crawl so I purchased the step version.

At least they responded to you. Mine are rusting at all seams as well. Design caught my eye and I purchased but I have never got a return call from customer service with any of my questions/concerns. I am done with Roam Offroad.
