Roam sidestep Rust

What are your plans on getting the POR15 on the inside? That's where mine are rusting the most.

Plan to brush it in where i can. If it rusts on the inside, i dont really care. I would consider it a bonus if i get a good coating in there. I am not planning to "dip".

Their website doesn't say anything about the e-coat. Product description on both products are pretty much copy and paste and I thought the difference between two versions was step vs rock slider. I don't rock crawl so I purchased the step version.

LOD Destroyer wasn't available when I was shopping for the steps. I should've waited .

Sorry about that.. So the way it was explained to me is both items are the same. The difference being is the steps are body mounted while the sliders are frame mounted, also the sliders are E coated while the other is not.

As you can tell from my profile picture, I gave up on my ROAM steps and went back to the original rock rails. Good thing I kept them. With all the rust, the steps just looked like crap and made my Wrangler look like crap. If anyone wants to buy some rusty ROAM steps let me know.

You're not alone. My ROAM steps started showing rust at the edges after only two months. The powder coating is definitely not robust enough to withstand Midwestern winters. In fact, I'm wondering if any other brand's steel steps can do much better. I'll keep touching them up periodically until I get fed up enough to have them stripped and covered in undercoating.

I've said it before, and I'll repeat it. ROAM has nothing to do with their powdercoating...they don't do it, an outside shop does. Powdercoating is very VERY weak at the edges, and the ROAM steps have a LOT of edges, this will happen to ANY brand. If you want stronger powdercoat, get tubular style steps, as they will be stronger (but will still rust over time because powdercoating is weak in general especially parts you step on) but if you like the design of roam, budget another 125 bucks to linex them.

You have said it multiple times, but ROAM decides who they contract with to perform their powder coating. If this is to be expected, ROAM should have some disclaimer or find somebody else to contract with. I will be contacting them to possibly upgrade and linex, but to suggest they have no liability because they don’t do the powder coating is not accurate.

For those looking for an alternative that stands behind their finish

I have the GoRhino Dominator D6 Sliders with removable drop steps one reason I decided on GoRhino was for their powdercoat warranty, GoRhino warranty's their finish for 5 years. While I have only had them since NOV yet live in Washington (one of the wettest states) not a spec of rust, regardless I expect GoRhino back their warranty.

• Limited lifetime on stainless steel products
• 5 year warranty on black powder coat products
• 5 year warranty on chrome products
• This warranty does not cover exposed welds

Finish warranty covers peeling, flaking, or cracking. Washing all finishes regularly with car wash soap and rinsing well with water is the best method for maintaining the finish on your products. You must also protect the finish with nonabrasive automotive wax on a regular basis. The use of any compound which contains abrasives becomes a self-defeating exercise as the compound scratches the finish and opens it to corrosion. The use of harsh chemicals used to remove bugs and tar may also cause the finish to fail and should be avoided.

I don't have a pair yet, still on the fence but am curious if you can spray bed liner and just keep that maintained? Is it possible to spray all around or are they boxed in and unable to reach the inside?

I get it but Im a fan of their looks and sounds like the quality of the sliders/steps are very good. From what I understand is their powder coating process is lacking. Im waiting to hear if there is a fix or what as Id like to get a pair of these.

Installed my Roam frame mounted slider / steps today. With the updated flag nut brackets it was easy to do in my garage. I did need my son to help as it is tough to get the bolts started on a few, but overall very easy of you follow the online instructions. Finish does seem a bit light. Had one spot scratched from shipping but i just touched it up. Will for sure buy again when my 2020 re-order comes in.

For those that have Linex'd their Roam steps, was Linex able to coat the inside of the steps? Mine are rusting massively on the insides.
