Yah you can never get a constant and consistent measurement to the ground because that is dependent on tire size and tire pressure, your contract has to be suspicion only. The base line has to be set for you average stock vehicles and go from there.

if it is on level ground and the tire pressure is at lets say 32psi

then that is the point, the only differences are the tires size and suspension

the "base" can be whatever you want when you take those variables into account.

I can say "my base is a 23 rubicon XR at 32 psi on level ground with an XR stock suspension"

then I changed just the springs to xxxx and now this is my ride height.

or

then I changed my tires to xxx and now this is my ride height.

need to have "measure to" points that are always the same no matter the trim.

At that point different suspensions and tires can be factored in.

like ground to door handles

I would have posted that origionally but my jeep was totaled/murdered (long story) when this question poped into my little brain. I wil circle back when my new Rubi lands, 3-15 tentativly.

the only issue here is there is no consensus on what the "base" for measurements should be. and it should definitely be more than just door handles.

But that base is only YOUR base and
Cannot be used for anyone else.
The point here is to set a base set of measurements that are consistent with ALL JL models that anyone can refer to for an average.
There are too many tire variables for any kind of accuracy unless you are just tracking changes in one vehicle with the same tire and pressure.

This is with the correct factory front springs installed. They originally put the wrong springs in the front, which is why there can be so much variance even between exact same trim models. We're seeing the factory just throw on whatever springs they have laying around as they roll through the assembly line in other threads.

So far my base measurement comes fro 3 vehicles on the dealer lot.
9 7/8”. Sport base 2door
9 7/8” Sahara 4 door not too loaded
10 3/8” Rubicon 4door loaded steel bumpers and all.
The rear of the Sahara was as high as the Rubicon. rubicon sat level where the sport and Sahara had a rake.

My XR is sitting right where it's supposed to be with a 1.5" lift. Your front is sitting low because of the extra weight from your add-ons.

You could either put larger springs in front, or add 1 inch spacers to get your height back. I would do spacers because you will get an exact known lift height, allowing you to dial it in.

Oh definitely I’m sitting low. an XR should be at about 11.5-12” (1.5” taller then regular stock) .. My XR wasn’t that high new. I won’t do spacers and loose more coil compression. My choice was to go with RK JL Diesel 2.5” springs or 3.5” RK springs. The guys at RK suggested to go with 3.5” springs for a better ride.

From top of the axle tube to the leading edge of the upper coil pocket. This is the consensus between a number of us...

I think you might be misunderstanding my measurement. The 12.5" is from the top of the axle tube, to the lower lip of the spring perch.

I think it is 11 3/4” using the top of lower spring pad to top of upper spring perch lip.

Ok then your measurement makes sense. I think we can standardize the top of the tube to upper spring per lip. Measuring shock eye to eye on a JL with 35 and bigger tires is a real PITA.
On the JK the shock length was much easier and very consistent.

I’ll rework that diagram this evening. It must be noted too that anyone who puts lower outboard shock mounts won’t be able the use the shock eye to eye method unless comparing on their own Jeep as they add modifications.

So for clarification, I just did a tire rotation and took measurements with Jeep on jack stands, suspension on full weight, and tires off for better accuracy…

Rubi XR with 2.5” RK springs + ARB Full width Bumper and 12K XRC Gen 3 winch (total extra weight 214lbs)
- shock eye to eye 21.5”
- axle tube to upper spring perch lip 12.5”

EDIT….

compare to average stock Sport, Sahara, Rubicon figures:
- shock eye to eye 19 7/8”
- axle tube to upper spring perch lip 10 7/8”

It's also useful when picking different shocks, or calculating how much bump/droop is available.
