Hey Everyone, I've been reading a fair bit about pentastar lifter failures, and wanted to see what the consensus is on the baxter performance oil filter adapter with anti-drainback valve? Do y'all think it would prevent lifter failure by reducing/preventing dry starts?

And how common is the lifter failure really? Worth 350 bucks to potentially prevent it?

I have one in my JL and JK. I have no idea if it helps, of course, but it's eerie to not hear the ticking lifters on startup. I can't help but think it will help longevity.

If you have the e-torque option, you'll definitely need to create some clearance between a bracket and the oil filter canister.

I did three things to hopefully prevent cam and rocker frailer
One. Baxter oil filter adapter (Much quieter on start up)
Two. RPM EXTREME JL Fan controller (Keep oil and coolant temps down by 25 to 30 degrees)
Three. 5/30 oil
Any modified jeep like mine will see much higher oil and coolant temps and the JL Fan controller solved this problem
I was seeing temps as high as 235 and now with the Fan controller under a heavy load the highest I have seen is 212
Under normal driving it stays around 190 to 195 degrees

My Baxter Performance filter adaptor is arriving today and I will install this afternoon. Purchased from Northridge 4x4 with good discount. I will pair with WIX 57502xp filter. It can only help to keep oil to the lifters on start up quicker. Plus the added bonus of a spin on oil filter.

Can you share the discount / code? I see the free shipping, but nothing else till my basket hits $850.

I ordered through Northridge 4x4. They had them listed for $341.96. I used "summertime" code for a -$25 discount, with free shipping.

It's honestly heat that kills the lifters combined with thin oil. Run 0w-30 on you JL and it'll probably never fail. If you have a vented hood that's great too

will follow this thread.

i think i’d like to take a look at cams at 100k just to see and for the experience. i believe there’s a tool or two you can purchase to make the process a bit easier. i’m wondering if anyone had interest in sharing cost of the plastic tools involved? i think one helps to take tension off the chain. if no interest, that’s cool too ?

Received and installed the Baxter Performance oil filter adapter for my 3.6. It should help keep oil to the lifters quicker. My JL now uses spin on oil filters, which after the install might help to save the plastic oil filter housing. Nice quality and an easy install.

You have to remember that the Pentastar does not suffer from oil drain back as shown in the information below. So, the Baxter will not help in that regard. I always saw the Baxter as a way to either install a spin-on oil filter or relocate the oil and/or install an additional oil cooler.

It is hit or miss who will have issues with the camshaft/rocker arms and not everyone has it happened. The only thing that **may** help is to increase the oil viscosity. The Pentastar is not viscosity dependent, and I would run a 0/5W-30 in it to provide more protection. I have a friend in Texas who has ran 0W-40 from the first oil change and has over 120K on his now with ZERO issues.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From a post I created in 2022:

For those interested, I found this which details the oil system on the 3.6L Pentastar.

Of particular interest is this slide that shows the oil filter in the housing and indicates a drain port in the filter housing.

While there is no anti-drain back valve in the filter itself, the filter does serve as somewhat of an ADBV with its o-ring on the bottom tip of the filter.

There are two things that are almost certain:

1. After all of the oil has drained, if you pull the filter, more oil will drain out indicating the oil is being prevented from fully draining back into the pan.

2. The main oil galleries remain full of oil and I will opine this is where the additional oil comes from when you pull the filter. If the oil galleries did not remain full of oil, there would be measurable and substantial wear on the crankshaft journals and likely piston skirts since those are the first things lubricated when the engine is started. It is the o-ring at the bottom of the filter that "seals" and prevents the oil from fully returning to the pan.

Try this
Let your 3.6 sit over night and then remove the oil filter
What you will see is almost dry oil filter
What you will not see is an oil filter dripping with oil
All the oil has drained out of the oil filter housing
