I have the ticking sound 3.6L/manual. It is not the type that is loud at start then slowly goes away. Its a constant ticking when the engine is running and gets louder when I accelerate. I've read that when it is at start up, it is just a bad rocker arm. If its constant do I need to replace the lifter and rocker arm? Should I replace them all or will I know which one is bad once I open it up?

Looking to have all parts needed on hand before I start pulling it apart. Any recommendations on brands or just stick with Mopar?

You'll need to pull the valve cover (replace the valve cover gasket) and determine the failed part, intake or exhaust side, replace the lifter and rocker arm, measure the cam lobe height and inspect the finish quality. How long has it been noisy?

I have the same problem. I made an appointment and took it to the dealership to have them look at it. The service advisor came out and told me it was normal to hear the ticking under acceleration. He further stated that if he opened up a “star” report or request, Chrysler would deny it because it’s not happening at idle. I asked him what do I do as I don’t want it to get worse as my 5 year warranty is going to be up in a few months. He just said nothing and it’s probably not going to get worse. That was that and he implicate that it would be a waste of time for them to bring it in today and look at it, So we left. I’m having a hard time believing that a sound like that is just going to settle and not get worse. My luck it will probably cause something worse and it will be after my warranty is up and I’ll be screwed. Is there anything I can do?

At what rpm does it get noisy?

Are you capable of doing fairly technical engine work on your own?

It’s noticeable above about 2500 rpm
And up. I am pretty capable of doing some work myself. As long as I have some clear instructions or step by step directions to follow.

Take it to another dealership, and insist on them opening up a Star Report.
I see you are in California. Sorry, but you might be S.O.L.. Extended warranty?

No extended warranty just the standard 5 year. One thing I forgot to mention is I had the same dealership do an oil change on it while it had the steering recall fixed. I find it kinda interesting this ticking noise started a few weeks after they did the oil change. I’ve always done the oil changes on it and I’ve had no problems. As soon as someone else touches it, it starts making noises.

Rocker arm noise at 2500 RPM would be incredibly obnoxious, like a metal spoon in the spokes of a bicycle.

If you believe the dealerships oil change has anything to do with it, just change the oil again.

That’s the plan tomorrow. Hopefully it resolves it, but I’m not gonna hold my breath.

Mine is about the same maybe a little closer to 3000.

The noise is not that bad. Sometimes I think it’s gone then it will come back. At 3000 rpm is when I can readily notice it. At 2500-2800 it sounds similar to the ticking a diesel makes when idling.

I’d saya month or 2 but it’s not as loud as the rattling at startup that people get from the rocker arms that goes away after warming up

Rare for rocker arms and lifters to fail.

That said when did it start? Did it start after an oil change? How new is the engine. Rare to happen but every once in a while there is a burr or something gets in the oil when it was changed and clogs the lifter slightly. A possible fix: Red line it go thru gears 1-3 with it floored and see if you knock some lose in the lifter. It may or may not work you got nothing to lose. I have seen it work, but it was something in the oil.

I see you have manual trans, have you by any chance OVER revved it? That can lead to a rocker arm issue. Those engines are built and generally speaking will handle a 10% over rev. So if your red line is 5500 you are safe to go about 6000 rpm. Nothing to be gained performance-wise, you are on the down slde of HP/Torque as you head past red line.

Cam is least likely to fail and when they do they fail at the cam sprocket not on a single lobe.

Depending upon the internal design you may or may not be able to extract the lifter unless you remove the heads.

Lastly, it may go on its own over time and miles, I have that occur. You might be able to run a heavier wt oil, that too can help, look at your owners manual and see what weights of oil you can use.

Let us know your progress...
