They give anybody a license here in Florida.

Old and can't see... No Problem
Multiple DUIs.... No Problem
Dozens of unpaid tickets... Sign a payment plan, no problem.

Licenses for everyone! I take my life in my hands everytime I head out to work and Melbourne is quite tame. I'm from Tampa Bay and it is just wild over there, same with Miami.
I thought most Floridians got their driver licenses at Wal*Mart. The test consists of a bunch of people running up and down the aisles, drunk or on drugs, as fast as they can go, pushing shopping carts. Bonus points if you follow so closely to the person in front of you that your shopping cart smacks them in the shin. Bonus points for not stopping at the end of the aisle. Bonus points for stopping dead on a merge ramp. After all Florida did not earn the moniker of "tailgate state" because of college football parties. The only place Floridians go 35MPH is merging onto a 70MPH interstate.

What can you do? If it’s anything close to how it is here be prepared to wait. For a LONG time.

My accident was on 12/12/21. Needed both axles, drive shaft replaced., front bumper was bent, and other misc stuff. My rental car coverage ran out mid January. Just today I received my keys back - over 1/2 year later.

Off topic, love your profile pic, tehfrr. Obviously taken somewhere in the mountains up in Washington state?

OK silly what if question? Say I have a $100,00 liability coverage. I blow a light and T-bone a $120,000 dollar Ford Bronco.... We all know original sticker was say 76K. Does my insurance pay out 76K or 100K and who is responsible for the balance??? Or is Mr Bronco out of luck. Just wondering as I hear there are some $150 K Ford Lightnings out there....

I'm often occupied, by many things, often at the same time
Why did you say $120k Bronco? Is that what it's "actual" cash value is? If so, your insurance pays $100k and he sues you for the balance. Your policy only pays up to the limit. If you are underinsured, you're on the hook for the rest. It's the game we play when we pay lower premiums to have less coverage. If we're at fault, liable, for damages then we owe whatever is over our policy limits.

Now, to the question of the value, it doesn't matter what the sticker says. It matters what the "actual" cash value is. What is the vehicle actually worth.

I got rear ended in my Porsche by an uninsured, unlicensed, unemployed POS. My insurance covered everything except my deductible and my rates did not go up. Allstate.

I just checked my property liability coverage since I was curious, and I'm covered for $100K.

Still, I decided to make a few changes:

  • Bumped property liability from $100K to $250K - Should be OK there unless I bump a Ferrari.
  • Bumped uninsured/underinsured property liability from $25K to $100K. That'll cover a new Jeep if this happens to me.
Total increase in premium?
$10.33 every six months.

How much would I have "saved" if I knocked property liability down to $25K (State Minimum)?
$9.00 every 6 months.

Seems like a no brainer that if you have insurance, max out coverages to levels to protect yourself.
100%. Increasing coverage is so cheap that it's foolish NOT to do it.

We have $300/$300 for bodily injury liability, $300/$300 for Uninsured Motorist bodily injury and $250K property damage liability. I bumped it from base $100K coverage up after a scare on an accident where i thought the guy may fake injury and what not.

Because of the amount of douchebags out there i went even further and got ourselves a $1M umbrella policy which kicks in after the current coverage levels. It's only $400/year so to me that is a small price to pay to know we are well covered.

I'm in SC (not the OP who is from FL).Thankfully State Farm has a great way of updating coverages and quoting. I'm still using my agent to finalize it, but this is the change in price for the coverage change.
Going to be visiting Murrells Inlet in a couple of weeks as we look to relocate there. Going to scout Mt Pleasant as well as a potential destination though the house prices there are no joke. Excited to check it out.

What is covered in the umbrella policy, and who did you use? I don't dislike that idea.

MtP/Charleston is a fun place. It's grown a lot so it isn't the same place as when I moved here 20 years back. In some ways good, and in others bad (traffic).

Murrell's Inlet Marshfront is such a cool spot. A buddy of mine's family owns Kings Krest next door to it.

I'm building a house in MtP right now. I feel what you are saying...

I have auto, home and umbrella all through Geico. My experience with them has been very positive and I figured in case the umbrella was needed that it would be easier if all policies were with the same company.

Here's the snippet from Geico

How does an umbrella insurance policy work?
An umbrella insurance policy helps protect your assets and your future in two important ways:

  1. Umbrella insurance may provide coverage when your homeowners, auto, and boat insurance policies limits are exhausted.
  2. Umbrella insurance provides coverage for claims that may be excluded by other liability policies including claims like false arrest, libel, slander, and liability coverage on rental units you own.
What does umbrella insurance cover?
Umbrella insurance provides coverage beyond the limits of your other insurance policies, or for claims that may not be covered by liability policies. Umbrella insurance generally provides liability coverage for:
  • Injuries
  • Damage to property
  • Certain lawsuits
  • Personal liability situations

Nice pad you got going up over there. Given the concrete columns looks like you're near the water.

Our kids are 10 and 6 so we're looking for good schools since we have a long way to go and Wando is very highly rated, so that's a reason we're checking out MtP. Murrells Inlet's schools are also good but we're coming from a small town of ~20K people so i think MI more closely resembles that. Plus prices, while high, are considerably more reasonable than MtP.

Let your insurance company go after the other person's insurance. And you can sue them in court for any further damages. Go after any assets they may have. If for nothing else than to teach the SOB a good lesson to NOT ever again drive around with shit insurance like this.
OK, I gotta ask...what amount of coverage is NOT considered "shit insurance?" What's the justification for that amount?

I'll shoot you a DM. Feel free to use me as a resource while you are scoping out the area. Schools in MtP are very good.
