Isn't that amazing? Our Grand Cherokee had the 4.7L V8 with about 240 horsepower. The Pentastar has less displacement but more horsepower and more economy than the slightly older V8. But the old V8 was no slouch in performance.

Torque can be a static measurement, in which case we call it a moment, and no work is done. But if the object moves, its dynamic torque and work is done.
I believe the accepted technical definition of dynamic torque is a torque that is accelerating or decelerating in force.

Torque itself, has no measurement of amount of movement nor time. These two additional elements, combined with torque, define a quantative measurement of work that makes comparitive analysis possible and meaningful.

Torque itself, has no measurement of amount of movement nor time. These to additional elements, combined with torque, define a quantative measurement of work that makes comparitive analysis possible and meaningful.
A rock taped to a breaker bar on a lug nut is exerting force, torque, on that nut. But unless it is heavy enough to exert enough torque to twist that lug nut, no actual "work" is being performed

Yeah, that's what I said earlier.

HP = (RPM(<-Movement and time) x Torque(<-Force x Distance))/5252(<-Constant)

Or in physics, Power = (Force x Distance) / Time

"dynamic torque is a torque that is accelerating or decelerating in force." An object can't move without accelerating. Dynamic torque is when a force moves an object about its radius.

Engines create torque by turning the crankshaft. Sure, horsepower is a quantative measurement of work that makes comparitive analysis possible and meaningful. But its still based on torque.

All I've been saying is that without torque, horsepower is meaningless, and to answer OP's question; Torque is very important when off-roading. Or on-roading. Or spinning your wheels floating in outer space.
