I had a 2016 grand Cherokee that had the same problem on the front of the hood. Luckily the dealer took care of it under warranty without any problems and it turned out good as new.

Does the problem still exist with newly built JL’s? I’m picking mine up later this week.
My 2020 has the bubbles on the door hinges and tailgate, just got the pictures taken at the dealer yesterday, at 23k miles I'm confident it will be covered under warranty. My dealer said they currently have 20+ Wranglers queued up for the same warranty work.

Crazy. Hopefully the problem has been addressed and corrected by now. Having a high volume of warranty claims over several years isn’t good for anyone. Except the body shops.

Have not changed manufacturing process - so YES it is still a problem

My dealer is one of the few local ones (so I'm told) that take in body work warranty issues (they have partnered with a body shop). Weirdly in their experience virtually all of the Jeeps with the bubbles seem to be the red or black ones. He also said the issue first started in various 2013ish Jeep models, then similarly aged Wranglers but mostly on the hinges themselves, not the door panels, and starting with the 2018's its the door and tailgate panels. Must take time to work through a new process at the factory. The fix is some sort of coating that needs to be applied to all exposed metal and cured for 36+ hours, then the hinge and door are assembled and painted. Told to expect my Jeep to in in for 4-7 days.

I've now gotten to being a parking lot creeper when I see a JL if I happen to be walking into a store and checking out their hinges, haven't come across one in the wild yet.

There have been White, Mojito, Granite, and Ocean ones reported in this thread alone Any color correlation is just opinion or coincidence. Someone would have to confirm, but the JK's (i.e. the 2013) were on-the-hinge issues only-no bubbling on door panel paint. They had steel door panels and Aluminum hinges whereas ours our both Aluminum.

Am I just off base here, but I'm picturing a thin piece of gasket material behind the hinge could potentially keep this from being so rampant an issue?

It will help but only real solution is to put protective coating on raw material (PAINT!!!)

Paint is covered for 5 years- I just sent my 2018 back for a second paint fix-because I listened to the others going through the corrosion issue. Yes any Wrangler built after 2018 will have this issue as they havent fixed their sealing and coating then painting problems.
Anyway- one hinge still had bubbles the other 3 appeared to have been sanded; coated; primed; painted as well as underneath (the body portion) too. So sent it back said fix the last hinge and I pray this is the answer.
* AB guy said he keeps fixing this mistake on the Wranglers - and he hasnt had any returned. Not sure if I had my Wrangler over the 5 year warranty if Id being it back should it continued to corrode after been said fixed.
fingers crossed! Is it really cheaper for Jeep to pay for this mishap should owners notice before the warranty expires; than to JUST do it correctly in the first place???????

Washed the jeep over the weekend and noticed small bubbles in the paint at one of the rear door hinges. I am over a year and have roughly 27k miles. They are hard underneath and the paint is not loose and pretty sure they were not there last time i washed the vehicle. It cant be rust under the paint since the doors are aluminum. All other hinges are fine. Has anyone seen this issue?

Yes see other wrangler threads. Probably 20,000 2018+ wranglers are going through this…. Jeep didnt seal the hinges

Ok people I just got my 2018 back! It was repainted but First they sanded the bolts/the hinges/ the door because of the bubbles! I spoke to the Jeep case mgr of my bubbling issue. He advised Jeep is well aware and the aluminum doors have been around for 7 years. All of them have a cheap primer sprayed under the hinges and thus the bubbling with metal to steel. They do not listen to the people who work in Jeep sales or AB - they have machines putting the door etc on and mass production = less care. So the cheap primer used isnt adequate and the hinges will bubble.
so myJeep- the AB shop completes the job appropriately. ( I pray) they Sanded the bubbles and said to use a major top notch primer sealant- on hinges- doors- under and over- then bake- and all is sealed correctly. I will watch like a hawk for any issues- but Jeep knows & wont fix this, because of the ROBOT or machine putting our product together! Cost effective. Really? Hmmmmm

As service employee at Jeep dealership I know this issue well. I own a MY19, first registered 08/2020,JL.
After one year, and more n more JLs with this specific problem I now decided to fix it in my own, before it becomes to much.

From one point on you just can replace doors and hinges to properly fix it... This point comes after warranty... In a JLU it means 13k in Germany for all doors and rear gate.

Yesterday I went with the first hinge. All others will be done by same procedere.

Finally I will put a foilage between door ans hinges.

Bought new hinges, painted them satin black like the grille.

Prepared the door, painted it in the hinge area, and polished the conture after it was solid to get a smooth finish. Wasn't 100% matching color, but as I will put on a foilage, I can live with it. hopefully I won't get issues in Future.

And that is how it SHOULD be done!!! I plan on doing my hood hinges when it gets back from body shop, then every hinge on my JL will have paint behind it.

Question - what do you mean by "foilage" - a gasket or seporator between hinge and door?

Yes, I will put a black matte foil between every door and hinge. Will Post some pics when done.

I now make offers to every customer with JL and till now no Problems, to repaint the parts and to prevent future damage

If this cancer appears on my Jeep idk if I’d be willing to deal with all this headache or want this to show on the CarFax. I’m thinking the first sign of this I’ll just try and trade it in and get a new JL if the issue has been fixed or a TJ.

im worried to have it fixed for it just to come back once outside of warranty
