The general consensus of the many threads on this topic comes down to its a completely stupid vehicle that only exists to part fools from their money. That said if you have the money, and dont care about it being not what a wrangler is about go for it.
no idea what you are talking about. I use my 392 more than I did a 3.6. It gets better mileage, runs cooler and is fun to drive. It is BS to say not what a wrangler is about. If the 392 was the same price as the others, there would not be anyone that saying anything. But they don’t cost the same, to me it is a pay to play thing. Not interested in any other engine option anymore in this life. as with everything in our society, if you have, do, look, buy something different than the masses it is deemed wrong or bad. My 392 gets average 19-20 On road. Has been off road 50% of its miles. It gets about the same mpg as my 3.6 off road without overheating on every trip. Willing to skip Starbucks or fast food for the rest of my life to afford it…

You're 3.6 over heated on every trip? I had three 3.6 JLs and never had a cooling problem on any of them.

Yeah overheating was never a concern for the reliable 3.6 a great engine by the way.

Bring it by my place, I’ll show you 245° in 2 miles from my driveway. And if you choose to stay with your foot in it, it will limp. 100% guarantee.

Maybe you should talk to a high volume service dealer. The one at the foothills west of Denver keeps long block 3.6 engines in stock because of how many head gaskets blow with over heating and the driver keeps on rolling till they’re completely destroyed.

I remember head gasket issues on the 2011-2012 models never heard anything else since.

Maybe you should show some empirical data instead of I should contact dealers?

I didn't show any I was just saying the 3 3.6 engines I had never overheated or even came close and were reliable. It was experience.

Last straw for me was ~240° coolant temp on outside air temp of -5° on my commute up to the Eisenhower tunnel. I said enough and traded in on a 392. Every 3.6 I have ever been in is the same. Owner says “mine doesn’t overheat”. Pull up off road pages and the coolant temp is 240°+. High elevation in stop and go traffic and 5-10 mile long climbs = overheating. Live in the mountains of colorado and just like @CarbonSteel you‘ll see ridiculously high engine temps, makes you get rid of it.

OK. That doesn't change anything I posted. I hear that shit all the time about the 3.0 is "Terrible I try to carry 10k pounds over Rabbit Pass in Colorado!"

3.6 is a good engine. For reliability, yeah if that was my only concern I would take it over a 392 parts bin engine.

Rabbit ears pass is the way I go to the Walmart. Did it Saturday, in the snow. No issues with the hemi :CWL:

That and I am sure those ridiculously high temperatures contributed to my coolant leak which was either a cracked block or head. Replacing the oil cooler did not fix it. Aside from that, it is simply gutless at altitude. Glad I dumped it...

I swear I did it once, and I pulled off into the emergency lane and a Trooper stopped I was having altitude sickness. I was from Tennessee was like nothing compared to that pass. Thought I was going to pass out so stopped. A real thing. I contest to that.

Rabbit ears is a very low elevation summit comparatively. But the climb is tough. 7.3 miles where 74% of the climb is at 5-10% grade and 5% is at 10-15%. The steepest quarter-mile is 9.3%..

Yeah but I will just be quiet with your complaints on 3.6 though :)

Well it is a dilemma I had never driven a 392 until today I like it but dealers around here had the Msrp marked on their website low 90s BUT. There was this other little sticker that says. Dealer markup. 25000 and the second one said 40000 I told them I wasn’t paying. Over msrp. And would find a deal below msrp as for 3.6 vs 392 only first jlur it did over heat when the thermostat stuck that was around 55000 miles in my gladiator. No problem ever ever with 37s and stock 410 gears. I drove it over the grapevine pass in all temps from 35 in winter to 104 in summer. The jlur overheated on flat ground 80 degrees in the middle of the San Joaquin valley. 15 miles from nowhere. But again that was the thermostat I don’t about the 392. They were both brand new and. With out 30 miles on them. None had an mpg over 10.4 I would think they would loosen up with time? A short. 4 mile test drive is too short to evaluate a 90000 purchase.
