On my 2019 Sport S, the left dial also controls the lights in the center console cup holders and side door latches.

However, I believe the light from the Milky Way on a dark clear evening has more lumens (lm) than the highest dial setting. Similarly, you can only see the difference of the intensity of this dial while in the dark.

Makes sense, since I couldn't see anything happening

Most of us have the headlights set to auto.

Turn the headlight switch to manual and turn on the head lights.

Now turn that dial and you will see you can adjust the brightness of the instrument panel and of the info/tainment screen.

The headlights must be on or the dial does not do anything.

As other have said, I don't think the Hubble telescope could detect the faint light from these "ambient" sources. Has anyone done an aftermarket swap so these would be a bit brighter? I heard the bulbs, or LEDs or whatever they are, are a bitch to swap out.

If you donā€™t have lights in the door panel it does nothing. Thatā€™s what my dealer told me. I messed with that thing for two days before I asked lol.

The foot well/ cup holder dimmer is very subtle. I think I used it once, said ā€œoh, thatā€™s neatā€, and then just left it on Max for the last 4 years. Even at Max bright the lighting is faint. Just enough to be useful on Max. If you go past the detent, it forces the dome light on. Which Iā€™ve also used maybe once. The map lights do more than the dome.

The instrument dimmer I use often. The auto headlights come on just a bit too early, and I use it to force the instruments back to daytime mode. On dark roads, I dim it to almost minimum to bring emphasis on light coming in from outside off of the road.

My 2021 Willys Sport does not have footwell or front door handle ambient lighting and the Ambient Light Dimmer Control (left wheel) does absolutely nothing. I do have ambient lighting in the cup holders but it only adjusts with the Instrument Panel Dimmer Control (right wheel). It would be helpful if the owner's manual said something like "if equipped" but they didn't bother to do that.

The left one either puts money into or takes money out of the bank account of the Crown Prince of Nigeria. That guy makes his living ripping people off, so I suggest leaving it at the maximum withdrawal setting at all times.

Ah, but which is which?

So the best you can do is leave it in the middle and hope for the best.

AUeng is correct, my 2021 Willys it does nothing, my 2016 Willys also didnā€™t have lighting in the footwell. Only certain ā€œmodelsā€ have the ambient footwell lighting, the switch fills a gap/hole in the dash.

Just ask @cosine he knows!
It spins. It's a dial. That's what it does.
Yep, it's intentionally put in there to create threads on Jeep JL forums :)
